About Saint Joseph Roccamena

Every March 19th, Roccamena—a small agricultural village in the Palermo hinterland nestled between the two branches of the Belice River—gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Joseph. It is one of the town's most cherished celebrations, featuring the creation of the Altari di San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph Altars) laden with traditional dishes, the blessing and distribution of the iconic Saint Joseph bread to the needy, and a brass band accompanying the procession of the Vara through the historic center. A religious and folk tradition rooted in centuries of community history.

A patronal feast with an ancient heart

In Roccamena, a municipality in the Province of Palermo immersed in the Sicilian hinterland between the two branches of the Belice River, the Saint Joseph Festival is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when the entire community reconnects with its roots. The village, primarily agricultural and famous for its production of white melon, grapes, cereals, and vegetables, celebrates its patron saint on March 19th with rituals passed down through generations.

The Saint Joseph Altars

The most recognizable symbol of the festival is the Altari di San Giuseppe, set up thanks to the contributions of families and the entire community. These votive altars display traditional local dishes and, above all, the Saint Joseph bread, prepared with a special dough and molded into various symbolic shapes. After the blessing, the bread is distributed to the poor in a gesture of charity and sharing that lies at the very heart of Sicilian devotion to Saint Joseph.

The procession and the Vara

On the day of the festival, the statue of the saint is removed from the church altar during the ritual known as the scinnuta di la Vara di San Giuseppe. This is followed by the blessing of the Altar of Fraternity, a solemn Mass with the blessing of the bread, and the afternoon procession through the town streets, accompanied by the brass band. The day concludes with a tasting of traditional fried foods and sweets at the Altar of Fraternity.

Two annual appointments

The devotion of Roccamena to Saint Joseph is expressed in two moments: the spring celebration on March 19th and the summer event during the second week of August. The latter features the sacred performance Li Funzioni di San Giuseppe, based on the apocryphal Gospels and inscribed in the Register of Intangible Heritage of the Sicily Region. Between the Pigghiata di li Santi, sacred representations, and the Mangiata di li Santi—a shared meal based on pasta, meat, bread, and sweets—the festival offers a glimpse of a traditional Sicily still capable of building community around faith and the table.
