Procession, charity auction, and the traditional Saint Joseph soup in the historic center of Melilli
In the heart of spring, the town of Melilli, in the province of Syracuse, dedicates one of its most beloved celebrations to the Patriarch Saint Joseph. The festivities center around March 19th, the liturgical feast day, and are part of the rich calendar of popular festivals that characterize all of Sicily in honor of Jesus' foster father, the protector of families and workers.
Devotion to Saint Joseph has deep historical roots: the date of March 19th coincides with the spring equinox, a symbol of awakening after the winter cold and the return of abundance. In this spirit, in Melilli, as in many other Sicilian communities, the festival takes on the character of a collective rite, weaving together deep religious faith and ancient rural customs.
The highlight of the festivities is the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Joseph through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful and lively flag-wavers. Linked to the procession is the characteristic charity auction (the public sale of gifts from devotees): a custom that symbolizes sharing and solidarity, where products and gifts offered to the Saint are auctioned off to support the festival and the parish community.
The most iconic element of the Melilli festival is undoubtedly the Saint Joseph soup. It is a traditional peasant dish made with legumes, beans, wild fennel, and other herbs and vegetables that begin to grow in March; in the oldest version, various types of pasta were added. It was once cooked in a large cauldron called a quarara. Today, the tradition continues thanks to the Mother Church community, which spends three days preparing it in large quantities in the parish rooms, then distributing it for free to all attendees.
Between liturgical celebrations, community gatherings, and moments of popular festivity, the Saint Joseph Festival represents a precious opportunity for Melilli to come together and pass on its roots. The town's main church, the Mother Church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari overlooking Piazza Duomo, and the entire historic center provide the backdrop for a day that speaks of spirituality, gastronomy, and belonging, in one of the many gems of the Iblean territory in the province of Syracuse, Sicily.
