Saint John the Baptist Festival

A millennial tradition in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park

The Saint John the Baptist Festival is celebrated in Bisegna, a small municipality in the province of L'Aquila, perched at over 1,200 meters above sea level in the Upper Giovenco Valley, within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Here, among the woods surrounding the village and the hamlet of San Sebastiano dei Marsi, survives one of the most fascinating rituals of the Marsica region and all of Abruzzo: a festival that, on the shortest night of the year, unites Christian devotion with ancient cults linked to the summer solstice.

The magical night of Saint John

The heart of the celebration is the night between June 23rd and 24th. Pilgrims gather and reach the small oratory dedicated to the Saint, which stands isolated in the middle of the woods. It is an ascent that carries the flavor of an ancient pilgrimage, marked by darkness, the silence of the mountains, and the anticipation of dawn, when the priest blesses the water of the Saint John spring.

The ritual of 'comparatico'

At dawn, around the spring, the most defining gesture of the festival takes place: the comparatico. The faithful wash their hands in the water believed to be miraculous, clasp them together, and pronounce the word "compare" (godparent/companion) three times, thus sealing a pact of friendship and brotherhood destined to last a lifetime. It is a powerful social bond that, in Bisegna, intertwines with an ancient alliance between communities: a group from Trasacco has long participated in the festivities, and a friendship has been consolidated between the two towns, strengthened by the ties of the 'comparatico'.

Healing water and the solstice dew

The Saint John spring has always been believed to be miraculous against skin diseases: in the past, inhabitants would go there to seek healing from scabies and other ailments. Alongside the spring water, there is the collection of dew, which, according to popular tradition, has purifying virtues and protects against evil spells. These customs have roots in pre-Christian beliefs about the solstice, which have survived for centuries in the shadow of devotion to the Baptist.

The procession

The communal moment culminates with the procession: the statue of Saint John the Baptist is carried from the sacred site toward the village, where it traditionally meets the statue of Saint Anthony of Padua. It is the ritual return of the Saint among the houses of the village, greeted by the participation of the inhabitants and the many emigrants who return to Bisegna specifically for this occasion.

A heritage to preserve

In a municipality of few souls like Bisegna, the Saint John Festival is not just a religious appointment, but the glue of an entire community and a rare example of Abruzzese popular traditions that are still alive. Immersed in the pristine nature of the National Park, the festival offers visitors an authentic experience, far from mass tourism circuits, where the sacred, folklore, and mountain landscape merge into a single emotion.
