The patronal feast of Casarano, blending faith, tradition, and major concerts in the heart of Salento
The Saint John the Almsgiver Festival is the most cherished event of the year for Casarano, a town in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of lower Salento, Puglia. Each year, around the third Sunday of May, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that unites religious, civil, and folk dimensions, with a rich calendar of events animating the town's squares and streets.
Saint John the Almsgiver was the Patriarch of Alexandria in Egypt between the 6th and 7th centuries, remembered for his extraordinary charity toward the poor and needy, which earned him the title "the Almsgiver." His bond with Casarano is rooted in over a millennium of history and devotion, so much so that the community honors him on three distinct occasions: January 23, with the liturgical solemnity; the third Sunday of May, with the great patronal feast; and May 31, commemorating the miracle of 1842. The May festival, in particular, draws thousands of faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors to the city.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the saint's statue, which travels through the main streets of the town accompanied by confraternities, clergy, local authorities, and a crowd of faithful. The celebrations are promoted by the church community and the parish of Saint John the Almsgiver, together with the Municipality of Casarano, and begin in the preceding days with the preparatory novena and holy masses in the city churches.
On the civil side, the festival expresses all the tradition of Salento's patronal feasts: artistic light displays illuminate the main street and squares with architectural light structures, marching bands and major lyrical-symphonic concert bands accompany the days, while the evenings are filled with concerts in Piazza San Domenico and Piazza Indipendenza. In recent years, the lineup has hosted protagonists of folk and singer-songwriter music, from the Salento pizzica of Antonio Castrignanò to the great names of Italian music.
The festivities are invariably closed by fireworks, with pyrotechnic companies competing in light and color shows in the outskirts of the town, in a finale that gathers the entire community with eyes turned to the sky. The Saint John the Almsgiver Festival remains, year after year, one of the most authentic identity-defining events of Salento and Puglia.
The 2026 edition of Casarano's patronal feast offered a particularly rich program spread over five days from May 15 to 19, with the addition of the traditional commemoration of the miracle on May 31. Alongside the liturgical celebrations and the solemn procession of the patron saint, the civil program alternated between marching bands, lyrical-symphonic concert bands, pizzica performances, and major names in Italian music, concluding with the final pyrotechnic competition.
The festival takes place in the center of Casarano (LE), with main concerts in Piazza San Domenico and Piazza Indipendenza, religious celebrations in the city churches, and fireworks in the outskirts.
