Four days of faith, music, and tradition in Erchie honoring the Patron Saints Irene and Lucia
Every year, at the beginning of June, the small town of Erchie, in the Province of Brindisi, experiences its most intense days with the Saint Irene Patronal Feast. It is the occasion that brings the entire community together around its Patron Saints, Irene and Lucia, in an inseparable blend of religious rites, popular tradition, and grand civic celebration. For four days, the historic center is transformed: the streets fill with people, the illuminations create arches of light over Piazza Umberto I, and the sound of brass bands accompanies every moment of the day.
The cult of Saint Irene in Erchie dates back to the 18th century. Devotion is fueled by a legend still passed down from father to son: it is said that in 1897, while a violent cyclone was hitting nearby Oria and sowing destruction, a farmer from Erchie saw Saint Irene in the sky with her arms open, surrounded by clouds, stopping the storm and sparing the town. Since then, the Saint has been considered the protector of the community, venerated alongside Saint Lucia.
The most solemn moment of the festival is the procession of the Patron Saints Irene and Lucia, which winds through the streets of the town followed by a moved crowd and brass bands. Alongside the religious dimension, the festival unfolds the entire repertoire of the Apulian patronal tradition:
Much more than a simple village fair, the Saint Irene Feast attracts visitors from all over the Province of Brindisi and the Salento, who come to Erchie to experience the warm and welcoming atmosphere of Apulian patronal feasts. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Salento hinterland, its cuisine, and its traditions, during one of the most beautiful evenings of the southern summer.
The 2026 calendar of the Saint Irene Patronal Feast in Erchie alternated moments of deep devotion with national-level musical performances. The common thread of the four days, besides the Patron Saints, was the immersive installation "The June Garden" set up in the historic center, and the monumental illuminations of Piazza Umberto I. The highlight of the civic festivities was the concert by Alex Britti, a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and performer who brought over twenty-five years of career experience, spanning blues, pop, and songwriting, to the stage at Largo Calvario.
The heart of the festivities is the historic center of Erchie (BR), including Piazza Umberto I, Largo Calvario, and the Montearso area for the fireworks display.
By car: Erchie can be reached via the SS7 ter and the provincial roads connecting it to Oria, Manduria, and Torre Santa Susanna. The reference motorway exits are along the A14 (towards Taranto) and the SS379 towards Brindisi. By train: the nearest stations are Oria and Francavilla Fontana, on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line.
All festival events (concerts in the square, illuminations, processions, and fireworks) are free of charge.
