The grand patronal feast of Augusta, blending faith, centuries-old tradition, and free concerts in Piazza Castello
The Saint Dominic Celebrations represent the most important religious and civil event in the town of Augusta, a seaside city in the province of Syracuse, Sicily. For over two weeks, the historic center, overlooking the gulf, comes alive with liturgical celebrations, processions, music, and festive crowds in honor of the city's Patron Saint.
The bond between Augusta and Saint Dominic of Guzman is rooted in the very foundation of the city, commissioned in 1232 by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. According to tradition, it was Saint Dominic himself who indicated the birth of the first community of Dominican friars in Sicily right here in Augusta. The feast is solemnly celebrated on May 24th—not on August 8th, the liturgical date set by the Church—in memory of the Saint's miraculous intervention which, according to popular devotion, saved the city from an Ottoman raid at the end of the 16th century.
The spiritual heart of the feast is the novena that precedes the solemnity, featuring the exposition of the relic arm—which houses a relic of the Saint—the recitation of the rosary, and Eucharistic celebrations led by Dominican friars and the diocesan clergy. The patronal solemnity features the procession of the reliquary and, above all, the highly anticipated exit of the vara (float) with the venerated statue of Saint Dominic, covered in gold and silver ex-votos, carried on shoulders through the city streets in a triumph of faith.
The feast is enriched by cultural moments of great appeal, such as the traditional historical pageant "At the Court of Frederick II of Swabia", which evokes the medieval origins of the city and the figure of the great Swabian emperor. Musical bands, including the "Federico II - City of Augusta" Band, accompany the various moments of the celebrations.
In the final days of the feast, Piazza Castello, in the heart of the public gardens, transforms into a large open-air stage. Every year, the Municipality offers a rich lineup of free concerts featuring nationally renowned artists, entertainment shows, and cabaret, culminating in a grand fireworks display over the sea, near the Badiazza marina, which enchants thousands of spectators.
Between the sacred and the profane, the Saint Dominic Celebrations offer visitors an authentic immersion into the identity of Augusta and Eastern Sicily: a centuries-old tradition that unites entire generations and attracts numerous faithful and tourists to the city every year.
The 2026 Saint Dominic Celebrations in Augusta opened on Sunday, May 10, and concluded on Monday, June 1. The novena took place from May 15 to 23, with the Patronal solemnity celebrated on May 24th, presided over by the Archbishop of Syracuse, Monsignor Francesco Lomanto, coinciding with Pentecost.
The civil heart of the feast was the lineup of free concerts in Piazza Castello: Thursday, May 28, Baby K; Friday, May 29, Alex Britti (who kicked off his summer tour from Augusta); Sunday, May 31, Bianca Atzei; and Monday, June 1, Fausto Leali. There was also space for entertainment with Bella & Friends, animation by Francesco Scimemi, and hosting by Salvo La Rosa.
The procession of the Saint Dominic statue through the city streets was held on the evening of the external feast, accompanied by the fireworks display at the Badiazza marina. All events in the square were free of charge.
Augusta can be reached by car via the A18/E45 motorway (Augusta exit) and the SS114 state road. The Augusta railway station is on the Messina-Syracuse-Catania line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about 40 km away.
Concerts and shows in Piazza Castello have free admission. A shuttle service is active during the peak evenings. It is recommended to arrive early for the nights of the major concerts and the statue procession.
The feast takes place between the second half of May and the beginning of June, a period with a mild climate that is ideal for discovering the historic center of Augusta and its seafront.
