The great autumn festival of the patron saint of Carosino, blending faith, tradition, and community

The Saint Biagio Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for Carosino, a small town in the province of Taranto, in the heart of Apulia. Unlike the winter liturgical feast of the saint, this major patronal festival takes place in autumn, around the second weekend of October, ideally linking it to the time of the grape harvest in a territory dedicated to viticulture. For a few days, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, rediscovering a heritage of devotion and traditions passed down from generation to generation.
The heart of the celebration is deeply religious. The festivities open with a triduum of prayer and holy masses in the Mother Church, accompanied by a choral festival dedicated to the Saint. Particularly evocative moments include the blessing of the wine cellars, which unites the sacred with the daily life of the local farmers, and above all, the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Biagio through the main streets of the center. During the festivities, the symbolic gesture of the handing over of the city keys to the Saint by the mayor is also renewed, a sign of the entire community entrusting itself to its protector. The highlight of the day is traditionally marked by a solemn mass presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Taranto.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers the joyful and popular face of Apulian patronal feasts. The streets of the town light up with traditional luminarie (decorative lights), while the band enlivens the days with concerts, and the classic cassarmonica (bandstand) set up in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III hosts light and symphonic music repertoires. The evenings continue with musical shows, DJ sets, and concerts that involve both young and old in an atmosphere of authentic community celebration.
As per the tradition of Southern patronal festivals, the most awaited and spectacular moment is the fireworks display that closes the festivities, illuminating the sky of Carosino and attracting inhabitants and visitors from neighboring towns. Every year, pilgrims and representatives of communities linked to the devotion of Saint Biagio also participate in the festival, welcomed in the spirit of hospitality and shared faith.
The Saint Biagio Patronal Festival is much more than a religious event: it is an occasion where Carosino rediscovers its identity, its rituals, and its sense of belonging. Organized by the Parish together with the Patronal Festival Committee, it represents one of the most authentic appointments in the calendar of popular traditions of the province of Taranto.
