The Saint Anthony of Padua Festival is one of the most cherished devotional events in Villa di Briano, a town of just over seven thousand inhabitants in the province of Caserta, Campania. Located in the Agro Aversano—the fertile plain stretching between Aversa and the Domitian coast, about twenty kilometers from Naples—this is a territory where religious festivals still define the community calendar more than any other event.

The festival is celebrated in June, around the 13th, the date the Church commemorates the Portuguese Saint who became a symbol of Padua and one of Italy's most beloved figures. In Villa di Briano, the celebration is not limited to a single day: festivities are spread across several Sundays, involving the town's various districts.

Devotion to Saint Anthony

Saint Anthony of Padua is invoked as the protector of the poor, children, and those who have lost something. It is a domestic, popular devotion that in Southern Italy is expressed through blessed bread, lilies offered to the Saint, and the simple gesture of a lit candle. In Villa di Briano, the Antonian cult exists alongside the even older devotion to the Madonna of Briano, venerated in the local rural sanctuary, and Mary Most Holy of the Assumption, the town's patron saint celebrated on August 15th.

The procession, the heart of the festival

The most anticipated moment is the procession: the statue of Saint Anthony leaves the church accompanied by the parish priest, confraternities, and a long parade of the faithful, winding through the streets past decorated balconies and families waiting for the Saint to pass by their homes. In 2025, the festival opened with a Holy Mass in the Rione Vanacore, followed by a procession through the district's streets: a way to bring the celebration out of the center and into the daily life of the neighborhoods.

The highlight of the 2025 edition was the free concert by Franco Ricciardi, an iconic voice of contemporary Neapolitan music, who drew a large crowd from neighboring towns on June 22nd. It is a prime example of how, in the Caserta and Naples hinterland, the patronal festival remains the main entertainment event of the year for entire communities.

The 2026 edition and the end of the Committee

The 2026 edition had an unexpected conclusion. The Saint Anthony procession took place as scheduled, but ended with a tense confrontation between the Festival Committee and the parish priest, Father Giuseppe Sagliano. After a clarification meeting failed to resolve the situation, the Committee publicly announced its dissolution regarding the organization of religious festivals, canceled the side events planned for the end of June, and returned the donations collected from sponsors. In a long statement to the citizens, the organizers recalled their three years of work dedicated to reviving local traditions, described the incident as an unfortunate event that should not have happened, and assured that their commitment to Villa di Briano would continue through social and cultural initiatives.

For future editions, the organizational structure of the festival is currently being redefined: religious celebrations remain under the care of the parish, while the civil program is yet to be confirmed.

Why it is worth visiting

Those who arrive in Villa di Briano in June will not find a large festival built for tourists, but an authentic village festival: chairs set out in front of doorways, the scent of street food stalls, the band accompanying the Saint, and illuminated alleys. It is an opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of inland Campania, just a short distance from more famous destinations like Aversa, the Royal Palace of Caserta, and the Domitian coast, and to observe a devotional tradition that is still deeply alive.
