Solemn religious and civil celebrations in the heart of Solofra, in the province of Avellino
In the heart of summer, the Municipality of Solofra, in the province of Avellino, gathers around Saint Anthony of Padua for one of the most attended events on the town's calendar. For three days, popular devotion and street celebrations intertwine in a program that combines solemn religious rites, live music, artistic illuminations, and fireworks, drawing residents and visitors from across Irpinia and the nearby province of Salerno.
The spiritual aspect is the core of the festival. The celebrations open with the preparatory triduum, consisting of the recitation of the Rosary, prayers to the Saint, and evening Eucharistic celebrations. The day dedicated to the Saint begins with the morning Solemn Holy Mass and culminates in the most anticipated moment, the procession: the effigy of Saint Anthony travels through the town center accompanied by the faithful, with a stop at the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo. The cycle of celebrations concludes with the Thanksgiving Mass at the Church of the Ascension at Balsami, traditionally presided over by Monsignor Mario Pierro.
Alongside the religious rites, the Saint Anthony of Padua Festival Committee organizes a high-profile civil program every year. The Saint's day opens with a tribute from brass bands, following the musical tradition that has always accompanied patronal festivals in Southern Italy: the guest ensembles perform in front of the church and in the town's squares, from Piazza Umberto I to Piazza Sant'Antonio. In the evening, the stages in Piazza Sant'Antonio and Piazza Mercato host free concerts that, in recent years, have brought well-known names of Italian and Neapolitan music to Solofra.
More than just a summer event, the Saint Anthony of Padua Festival is a moment of identity for Solofra: families return to town, associations and volunteers work for weeks, and the streets of the center change their appearance under arches of light. It is one of the occasions where one can best grasp the character of patronal festivals in inland Campania, where the religious dimension never separates from the convivial and musical one.
The solemn festivities are held every year in July and span three main days, preceded by preparatory rites. The events take place entirely in the center of Solofra and are all free to attend, making the festival an easy and pleasant stop for those visiting the province of Avellino in the height of summer.
The solemn festivities in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua were held in Solofra, in the province of Avellino, from Saturday, July 11 to Monday, July 13, 2026, preceded by the preparatory rites on Friday, July 10.
The religious heart of the festival was Saturday, July 11, with the morning Solemn Holy Mass and, at 7:00 PM, the traditional and well-attended procession through the town streets, with a stop at the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo. On Sunday, July 12, the religious festivities concluded with the Thanksgiving Mass at the Church of the Ascension at Balsami, presided over by Monsignor Mario Pierro.
On the civil side, Saturday was opened by the tribute to the Saint by the «Paolo Falcicchio» Brass Band from Gioia del Colle, directed by Maestro Susanna Pescetti, followed by a performance in Piazza Umberto I. Sunday evening featured Alunni del Sole in Piazza Sant'Antonio, while on Monday the 13th, Piazza Mercato hosted the «Primo e Ultimo Ballo» Summer Tour by LDA and Aka 7even. Completing the festival were the artistic illuminations by Baselice Luminarie and the fireworks displays by Pirotecnica Amodio Curci.
Solofra is located in the province of Avellino, in Campania, a short distance from both the Irpinian capital and Salerno, and is easily reached by car. All events take place in the town center, between the Church of the Ascension at Balsami, the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo, Piazza Umberto I, Piazza Sant'Antonio, and Piazza Mercato.
Religious rites are held in the morning and evening; concerts in the square generally begin late in the evening, around 9:45 PM - 10:00 PM. Admission to all events, including concerts, is free. On concert evenings, it is recommended to arrive early and park outside the center, which is closed to traffic.
