The patronal feast of Afragola and the new Summer Fest in Piazza Gianturco
Located in the province of Naples, in the Campania region, the town of Afragola is home to one of the most significant Saint Anthony sanctuaries in Southern Italy: the Pontifical Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua, on Viale Sant'Antonio. It is no coincidence that Afragola is known as the "Padua of the South," so deeply rooted is the devotion to the miracle-working Saint. Every year, around June 13th, the entire city experiences its most heartfelt celebration: an event that unites faith, popular tradition, and a sense of community.
On the day of the liturgical feast, the Basilica becomes the city's spiritual center. Eucharistic celebrations take place throughout the day, culminating in a solemn mass attended by religious and civil authorities. In the afternoon, the statue of the Saint is carried in procession through the main streets of Afragola, accompanied by a brass band, traditional hymns, and a crowd of faithful.
The devotion does not end in a single day. In the following days, the statue of Saint Anthony makes a long procession through the neighborhoods, reaching the Rione G.E.S.C.A.L. and surrounding areas, and even traveling to the nearby town of Casoria, where it is welcomed at the Church of Saint Anthony Abbot before its solemn return to the Basilica. It is a liturgical moment that calls for reflection, silence, and prayer, while also setting the rhythm of city life for an entire week.
Starting in 2026, the religious festival is complemented by a new addition: the Saint Anthony Summer Fest, promoted by the Ex Armeria with the support of the Municipality of Afragola. In Piazza Gianturco, which is made entirely pedestrian-friendly, two evenings of live performances, street art, music, and entertainment transform the public space into a meeting place for families and young people. The stated goal is to restore centrality to city spaces and create a new, fixed appointment for the Afragola summer.
The 2026 edition marks a double appointment in Afragola: the traditional patronal feast of Saint Anthony of Padua and the first edition of the Saint Anthony Summer Fest. On June 13th, the Pontifical Basilica hosts Eucharistic celebrations and the solemn mass, while the city procession continues in the following days, until June 20th, touching the Rione G.E.S.C.A.L., historic streets, and nearby Casoria. In parallel, on June 12th and 13th, Piazza Gianturco comes alive with street art, live music, and children's entertainment.
Piazza Gianturco pedestrianized from 5:30 PM to midnight. Free admission.
Afragola is located north of Naples, in the Campania region. By car, it can be reached via the Asse Mediano and the A1 motorway (Afragola exit). The Naples-Afragola high-speed train station is just a few kilometers away; the city center is served by buses and the Circumvesuviana/regional lines connecting to Naples.
Religious celebrations revolve around the Pontifical Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua (Viale Sant'Antonio 50). The Saint Anthony Summer Fest is held in Piazza Gianturco, which is pedestrianized for the occasion from 5:30 PM until midnight.
All celebrations and Summer Fest events are free and open to the public.
During the procession, an atmosphere of reflection and respect is requested. For the Summer Fest, evening hours are recommended to enjoy the fire shows, concerts, and DJ sets.
