The Saint Anthony Festival at the Convent is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in San Buono, a village in the Province of Chieti nestled in the Treste Valley, within the Frentani Mountains area. The celebration takes place around June 13th, the day dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, and centers on the monumental Convent of Saint Anthony, which stands outside the town in a green valley about two kilometers away.
The convent complex, construction of which began in 1575 at the behest of the Caracciolo family, the local feudal lords, was completed during the 17th century and donated to the Order of Friars Minor Observant. The church features a Baroque style with elegant Aragonese Rococo influences, while the small cloister retains the charm of monastic life from a bygone era. Today, the convent also houses the Museum of Art, Archaeology, and Culture of the Vastese area and is surrounded by a landscaped green space, making it the ideal place to experience the festival in an intimate and convivial atmosphere.
The highlight is the procession with the statue of Saint Anthony, accompanied by the community in a display of great popular participation, preceded by the celebration of Holy Mass. Alongside the religious observances, there is a traditional fair with stalls selling local products and handicrafts, and the special opening of the cloister, a precious opportunity to discover the convent's historic and artistic heritage up close. In recent years, the festival has also been enriched by initiatives such as the crochet flower festival, which has brought color and creativity to the convent grounds.
The religious festival is accompanied on the eve of June 12th by the Grilled Lamb and Triccitelle Festival, a highly anticipated gastronomic event. Grilled lamb and triccitelle—a handmade pasta typical of local cuisine—tell the story of the peasant and pastoral soul of this corner of Abruzzo, where conviviality at the table is an integral part of the celebration.
Between faith, historical memory, and authentic flavors, the Saint Anthony Festival at the Convent represents a moment of strong identity for the entire community of San Buono and the surrounding Vastese villages. It is the perfect occasion to visit a place of great environmental and cultural value, immersed in the landscape of the Frentani Mountains, and to experience the genuine hospitality of the Abruzzese tradition.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Anthony Festival at the Convent in San Buono does not yet have an official published program. According to tradition, celebrations take place around June 13th at the 16th-century convent dedicated to the Saint, featuring a procession, mass, fair, and the opening of the cloister, while the Grilled Lamb and Triccitelle Festival enlivens the eve of June 12th.
The festival is held at the Convent of Saint Anthony, about 2 km from the center of San Buono (CH), in a valley nestled in the greenery of the Frentani Mountains.
By car: take the Vasto Sud exit on the A14 motorway, then follow signs for the Treste Valley and San Buono. The convent can be reached from the village along the road leading into the valley.
