Traditional bonfires in Pianillo for the patron saint of Agerola
The Saint Anthony Abbot Festival is the most cherished patronal celebration in Agerola, a village overlooking the Amalfi Coast and perched on the Lattari Mountains in the province of Naples, Campania. The heart of the festivities beats in the Pianillo hamlet, where the San Pietro Apostolo Parish houses the ancient reliquary bust of the Saint, protector of animals, farmers, and fire. Every January, the community gathers around large bonfires lit in Piazzale San Pietro Apostolo, in a ritual that weaves religious devotion with rural folklore.
The eve is dedicated to the most evocative event, known in the local dialect as "A serรจ e Sant'Antuon'", the anticipation of the feast. In the late afternoon, folk groups parade through the village streets and gather in the square, where a large bonfire is lit, accompanied by a prayer dedicated to the patron saint. The fire, a symbol of purification and rebirth, remains the center of the evening: around the flames, people share traditional village dishes and enjoy folk music, including bagpipes, songs, and dances that bring the Agerola night to life.
On January 17th, the liturgical feast day of Saint Anthony Abbot, the celebration reaches its peak. At dawn, the sound of bells and firecrackers announces the occasion, while the votive lamp is lit. Throughout the morning, holy masses are celebrated, followed by the ancient custom of the blessing of the animals, with mules and other livestock brought before the church. The solemn procession carrying the Saint's reliquary bust winds through the streets of Pianillo, accompanied by the faithful.
Beyond its religious dimension, the festival is a convivial occasion that highlights the rustic cuisine of Agerola. Around the bonfires, visitors can enjoy typical local dishes and pork products, in honor of the patron saint of animals. The menu includes tripe salad, soups, ragรน, homemade desserts, and wine from the Lattari Mountains, in a festive atmosphere that unites young and old alike.
The Saint Anthony Abbot Festival offers an authentic glimpse into the folk traditions of the Amalfi Coast, far from the summer tourist circuits. It is a winter experience that combines spirituality, rural memory, and community warmth, perfect for those looking to discover the most genuine soul of Agerola and the Lattari Mountains.
The 2026 edition was held in Agerola, in the Pianillo hamlet, between January 10th and 17th. The traditional bonfires were lit in Piazzale San Pietro Apostolo, the civil and religious heart of the festival.
The evening of "A serรจ e Sant'Antuon'" opened the festivities with a parade of coastal folk groups, the lighting of the great bonfire accompanied by a prayer to the Saint, followed by a traditional menu and folk music around the fire.
The Saint's day was marked by the sound of bells at dawn, holy masses, the blessing of animals and mules, and the solemn procession with the reliquary bust through the streets of Pianillo, in the spirit of local popular devotion.
Agerola can be reached by car via the SS366 road, which connects the Amalfi Coast to Gragnano and the Vesuvius area. Alternatively, SITA buses to Agerola depart from the Castellammare di Stabia train station (Naples-Sorrento Circumvesuviana line). The Pianillo hamlet is served by local bus lines.
The festival takes place in mid-January, with the eve of the bonfires and the main celebration on January 17th, the patron saint's day.
Participation is free. Tastings of typical products may require a small contribution. Warm winter clothing is recommended, given Agerola's altitude and the outdoor evening events.
