The pagghiara: grand January bonfires in the neighborhoods of the Norman village in the Nebrodi mountains
In Troina, in the province of Enna, the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival is one of the most heartfelt events of the Sicilian winter. On January 16th and 17th, the village—one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, perched at an altitude of 1,121 meters in the heart of the Nebrodi Park—gathers around its hermit saint amidst prayer, conviviality, and the warmth of great bonfires. It is a popular and devotional celebration that weaves Christian liturgy with ancient rituals linked to fire and the winter solstice.
The most anticipated moment is the lighting of the pagghiara, enormous bonfires that illuminate the town's various neighborhoods on the evening of January 16th. The wood is collected in the preceding days through the traditional questua della legna (wood begging): groups of young people walk the streets to the sound of cowbells, receiving fuel from families. Historically, the fires burned in the most populous districts—San Basilio, Santa Lucia, San Procopio, Borgo, San Rocco, and along the Corso—and today, thanks to the work of the Confraternity, they are also lit in Sant'Antonino, Mulino a Vento, San Michele, and Rusuni.
The fire is more than just a spectacle: in popular tradition, it possesses the power to purify by burning, to banish evil, and to keep malevolent spirits at bay. Around the pagghiara, tables are laden with traditional sweets, yeast biscuits, and local specialties offered to those visiting the bonfires, creating a festive atmosphere that involves the entire historic center.
The festival follows a precise calendar. On the eve, after fireworks and drum rolls, a solemn Mass is celebrated at the Church of Santa Caterina, the seat of the Confraternity in Piazza Angelo Majorana; this is followed by the lighting of the pagghiaro in front of the church, the offering of biscuits, and a tour of all the neighborhood bonfires. On the day of the feast, after the morning Mass and the solemn late-afternoon celebration, the faithful receive the blessing with the Saint's Relic.
The cult of Saint Anthony Abbot in Troina has been documented since 1562, when Antonian friars were present at the abbey. The Confraternity of Saint Anthony Abbot was officially founded on May 26, 1946, and within a few years, it counted over three hundred members. In 1950, the statue carved by sculptor Ferdinando Demetz of Ortisei was purchased, while a portion of the Saint's relic arrived in Troina in July 2007 from the community of Aci Sant'Antonio. The tradition also lives on in summer, with a large outdoor festival and a procession of the statue and relic during the week around July 13th.
Visiting Troina for the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival also means discovering its extraordinary history: it was a stronghold and residence of Count Roger of Hauteville in the 11th century and the seat of the first Norman diocese in Sicily. The steep streets of the historic center, illuminated by the pagghiara, offer a unique atmosphere, suspended between faith, memory, and community warmth.
The 2026 Saint Anthony Abbot Festival followed the traditional two-day ritual in the Nebrodi village. Celebrations were centered around the Church of Santa Caterina and the pagghiara lit in the neighborhoods of Troina.

Troina is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Enna, at an altitude of 1,121 meters. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Mulinello or Catenanuova exits), continuing towards the interior. Winter clothing is recommended: temperatures at this altitude are cold in January.
The festival is free and open to the public. Sweets and biscuits are offered for free at the pagghiara.
