The festival of the patron saint of animals and fields, featuring prayer triduums and the blessing of animals
Every year, in mid-January, the town of Ispica, in the province of Ragusa, dedicates an entire week to festivities in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot, venerated by Sicilian popular tradition as the protector of domestic and farm animals, fields, and crops. It is one of the most cherished religious and traditional recurrences for the local community, drawing believers, families, and many pet owners to the Iblean historic center.
The figure of Saint Anthony Abbot, father of eremitic monasticism, has been linked to the rural world for centuries: his feast day falls in the heart of winter and symbolically marks the anticipation of spring's rebirth. Throughout Sicily, and particularly in the Iblean South-East, around January 17th, the saint is invoked for the protection of livestock and fields, in a devotion that has its roots in the region's peasant civilization.
In Ispica, the festivities unfold over the entire week, with prayer triduums and moments of reflection in the Church of Saint Anthony Abbot, around which the entire celebration revolves. The spiritual journey prepares the community for the day of the feast, when the statue of the saint is presented to the faithful on the church parvis.
The most anticipated and evocative moment is the blessing of the animals, imparted on the parvis of the Church of Saint Anthony Abbot: dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, and other domestic and companion animals are brought before the church to receive the blessing in a solemn rite of great participation. It is an event that combines religious devotion, rural identity, and affection for animals, involving the entire citizenry every year.
The Saint Anthony Abbot festival is part of a calendar of winter events that animate the towns of the Val di Noto, where devotion to the hermit saint remains alive and deeply rooted. In Ispica, a city known for its extraordinary Baroque heritage and the Cava d'Ispica, this celebration represents an opportunity to rediscover the religious and popular traditions of the province of Ragusa.
For the 2026 edition, Ispica dedicated the entire week from January 11th to 18th to festivities in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot, alternating prayer triduums and moments of reflection in the Church of Saint Anthony Abbot. The main festival was concentrated on the weekend of January 17th-18th.
On Saturday, January 17th, the liturgical day of the saint, religious services were held dedicated to the protector of animals and fields. On Sunday morning, the statue of the saint was presented to the faithful on the church parvis, and at 11:00 AM, the solemn blessing of the animals was imparted, a moment of great faith and popular participation. The celebration confirmed the vitality of one of the most cherished recurrences of the Iblean community.
