A rural festival at the gates of Rome

Every year, in the second half of January, Gallicano nel Lazio — a small town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the heart of the Prenestini Mountains — celebrates its oldest bond: the one with the land, animals, and farm work. The Saint Anthony Abbot Festival, combined with the Ciambellone & Local Products Festival, is one of the most popular events in the Lazio calendar, transforming the historic center into a vibrant space for popular celebration for an entire day.

Saint Anthony Abbot, commemorated by tradition on January 17th, is venerated as the protector of livestock and agriculture: this gives rise to the ritual that still structures the day, with the blessing of animals and agricultural machinery in front of the church. It is not a staged folkloric reconstruction, but an unbroken custom that the Gallicano community has passed down from generation to generation.

The Saint Anthony ciambellone, the true star

Those arriving in Gallicano for the first time are often surprised: the ciambellone that gives the festival its name is not a cake. It is the ciammellò, a savory knot-shaped biscuit made with flour, oil, anise seeds, and pepper, baked until crunchy. A humble product of the Prenestini rural tradition, it is now recognized as a local gastronomic treasure.

During the festival, the ciambellone is distributed by the priest to all those who bring animals and agricultural machinery to the blessing, and is then sold at stalls set up in the square along with other local products: oil, wine from the Castelli and Prenestini Mountains, cheeses, cured meats, and wood-fired bread.

Floats, tractors, and the flag auction

• The parade of decorated floats, organized by the «Antico Carretto» cultural association and private citizens, which travels through the town streets for the animal blessing.
• The exhibition of agricultural machinery and tractors in the center of the square, a moment highly anticipated by farmers and families.
• Live bread-making demonstration, with the baker from the «Antico Carretto» association working the dough in front of the public.
• The flag auction, a traditional charity auction that closes the day: the Saint Anthony flags are awarded to the highest bidder, with proceeds supporting community activities.
• The awards ceremony for the floats, with small mementos given to all participating groups.

The town's awakening and atmosphere

The day begins very early, at eight in the morning, with the free distribution of hot chocolate and typical Gallicano biscuits, accompanied by a carriage ride through the town center organized by the Nuova Pro Loco Tourist Association. It is the most evocative moment: the January chill, the scent of chocolate, the church bells, and the first floats lining up.

In the afternoon, the square comes alive with music and karaoke, while the food and wine stalls remain open until evening. Admission to the event is free; you only pay for what you consume or purchase at the stalls.

What to see in Gallicano nel Lazio

The village, perched on a tuff spur, preserves a medieval layout with the Palazzo Rospigliosi and the parish church of Saint Andrew the Apostle. The municipal territory also contains the remains of the ancient Latin city of Gabii, one of the most important archaeological sites in Lazio, and the Ponte Amato along the ancient Via Prenestina. A visit to the festival is therefore perfect for a full day of popular tradition, archaeology, and gastronomy, just over thirty kilometers from the center of Rome.
