The patronal feast of Montemaggiore Belsito in honor of Saint Agatha, Virgin and Martyr
The Saint Agatha Festival is the most significant celebration in the religious and popular calendar of Montemaggiore Belsito, a small village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, nestled in the scenic Valle del Torto about 70 kilometers from the regional capital. Every year, in the first days of February, the entire community unites around its patron saint, Saint Agatha, Virgin and Martyr, in an event that weaves together deep spirituality, tradition, and a sense of belonging.
Saint Agatha, a young 3rd-century martyr from Catania, is one of the most venerated saints in all of Sicily. In Montemaggiore Belsito, she serves as patron and protector: her figure, a symbol of unwavering faith leading to martyrdom, represents an identity landmark for the town, renewed from generation to generation. The festival, more than a simple liturgical moment, is an occasion of intense spiritual participation for the entire community.
In the days leading up to the feast, the relic of Saint Agatha is displayed and venerated in the Basilica, the town's mother church, and makes a pilgrimage to the other churches in the historic center: the Church of the Santissimo Crocifisso, overlooking the picturesque Piazza Roma, and the Church of the Immacolata. This journey of the relic through the town's places of worship guides the faithful toward the main day of the celebration.
The highlight is the day dedicated to the patron saint: it begins at dawn with the alborata (morning firework display) and the festive ringing of bells that announce the feast to the entire village. Following the Eucharistic celebrations in the Basilica, the afternoon features the solemn procession with the statue of Saint Agatha through the streets of the townโthe emotional heart of the entire eventโbefore the final celebration. The procession is a moment of profound faith and devotion that gathers residents, visitors, and many emigrants who return to the village for the occasion.
Organized by the Sant'Agata V.M. Parish and the Sant'Agata Committee, under the guidance of Father Salvatore Panzarella, the festival combines religious, popular, and social dimensions. Between exhibitions dedicated to the patron saint, moments of prayer, and the intimate atmosphere of the Madonie village, the Saint Agatha Festival remains one of the most authentic identity-defining events in the Municipality of Montemaggiore Belsito.
The celebrations in honor of Saint Agatha, Virgin and Martyr, patron saint of Montemaggiore Belsito (Palermo), were held from February 1st to 5th, 2026. The festival opened on Saturday, February 1st, at 6:00 PM, with a solemn Eucharistic celebration and the display and veneration of the saint's relics. In the following days, the relic continued its journey through the village churches, with the inauguration of an exhibition dedicated to the patron saint created by the students of the "Monsignor Arrigo" Comprehensive Institute.
Thursday, February 5th, the main day of the solemnity, opened at 8:00 AM with the alborata and the festive ringing of the bells. After the Eucharistic celebrations in the Basilica, the solemn procession of Saint Agatha wound through the village streets in the afternoon, followed by the concluding Eucharistic celebration at 6:00 PM. The organization was handled by the Sant'Agata V.M. Parish and the Sant'Agata Committee.
