The solidarity festival in the small shops of Piazza Belvedere, in the heart of the celebrations for Saint Sebastian the Martyr
In San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania, the month of January is marked by celebrations in honor of Saint Sebastian the Martyr, the patron saint who gives the town its name. Alongside the religious rites held in the diocesan sanctuary, the community gathers every year for an event that has become a local tradition: the Sagra do' zuffritto, sasicc' e frairiell', also known as the Solidarity Festival.
The 2026 edition, the twenty-ninth, was held on Saturday, January 24th, starting at 7:00 PM in the characteristic small shops of Piazza Belvedere, the spaces of the Vesuvius National Park Authority in the town center. Nearly thirty years of history speak volumes about how deeply rooted this evening is in the life of San Sebastiano: not a manufactured event, but a grassroots celebration that renews itself every winter.
The signature dish is 'o zuffritto, the Vesuvius version of the Neapolitan soffritto: a humble, winter dish born from the art of wasting nothing from the pig, which has now become a culinary emblem of the Neapolitan tradition.
Everything is prepared by the volunteers of the Don Bosco Oratory with the care of a home kitchen rather than the ambition of a gourmet proposal: it is precisely this simplicity, combined with generous portions, that has made the festival a highly anticipated event for those arriving from neighboring Vesuvius towns.
The organizers are the first to say it clearly: there are no big musical names here. The musical moments are entrusted to the youth of the parish community, who liven up the evening between one dish and the next. The declared goal is to be together, eat well, and reconnect in a family atmosphere that involves grandparents, parents, and children alike. Those looking for a spectacular gastronomic festival will find something different; those looking for the authenticity of a Campanian village feast will find exactly what they hoped for.
The alternative name of the event is no coincidence. The proceeds from the festival are entirely donated to the parish Caritas, which uses them to support local families in difficulty. The evening thus combines two dimensions that often travel together in Campania: the shared table and concrete commitment to one's neighbor. Eating a plate of zuffritto, in this context, is also a small gesture of participation.
The location is not a secondary detail. The small shops are the spaces of the Vesuvius National Park Authority overlooking Piazza Belvedere: a place that tells the story of the town's belonging to the Park and the volcanic landscape that surrounds it. San Sebastiano al Vesuvio stands on the slopes of the volcano, at just over 170 meters above sea level, in a territory marked by the history of eruptions, particularly that of 1944.
The festival is embedded in the broader calendar of patronal celebrations, which begin in the first half of January at the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Sebastian the Martyr and continue with solemn masses and the procession of the Saint's effigy through the town streets. The gastronomic event is held under the patronage of the Vesuvius National Park Authority and the Municipality of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, confirming the institutional recognition it enjoys.
Because it is one of the few opportunities to taste authentic zuffritto prepared according to the traditional recipe, outside of commercial restaurant circuits. Because admission is free and the atmosphere is welcoming. And because, a few kilometers from Naples, it allows you to experience a January evening as it was once lived in the Vesuvius towns: sheltered from the cold, with a hot plate in your hands and the patron saint's feast just around the corner.
On Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 7:00 PM, San Sebastiano al Vesuvio hosted the twenty-ninth edition of its most beloved festival, as part of the celebrations for Saint Sebastian the Martyr. The venue was once again the usual one: the small shops of the Vesuvius National Park Authority, in Piazza Belvedere.
The organization was handled by the Don Bosco Oratory, with the patronage of the Vesuvius National Park Authority and the Municipality of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio. As per tradition, no big names were expected on stage: the evening was accompanied by musical moments from the youth of the parish community, in a spirit of celebration and fraternity.
The stars of the table were zuffritto, served as soup over toasted bread, as a pasta sauce, or in a sandwich, and sausages with friarielli. Admission was free and the proceeds were entirely donated to the parish Caritas to support local families in difficulty.
The complete program of the patronal festivities was published by the Municipality of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio as a PDF attachment to the official news.
