The Sicilian seasoned bread festival in the medieval village of Motta Sant'Anastasia
The Sagra Do Pani Cunzatu is one of the most beloved summer events in Motta Sant'Anastasia, a small medieval village perched on a striking volcanic neck at the foot of Mount Etna, in the Province of Catania. Every summer, the central Piazza Mercato transforms into a vibrant social hub where flavor and tradition meet, drawing locals and visitors from the surrounding Etna towns.
The undisputed star is pani cunzatu, literally "seasoned bread": a loaf of homemade bread, often served warm, sliced and filled with extra virgin olive oil, salt, oregano, tomato, cheese, and anchovies. It is one of the island's oldest and simplest recipes, born from the peasant ingenuity of enriching bread with the few ingredients the land provided. Stalls are set up throughout the square, offering tastings of this seasoned bread in all its variations, alongside other local specialties.
The festival is about more than just food: evenings are filled with live music, dance performances, folkloric and comedy shows, and games for children, creating a festive atmosphere that appeals to all ages. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the authentic vibe of a Sicilian village while strolling through the stalls and alleys of the historic center, overlooked by the famous Norman tower.
Promoted by the Rione Panzera Cultural Association, a key player in the town's social life, the event was established just a few years ago but has already become a highly anticipated date on the local summer calendar. The third edition took place in June 2025, reaffirming the Rione Panzera's commitment to the gastronomic and popular traditions of Motta Sant'Anastasia and the Etna region.
The 2026 edition of the Sagra Do Pani Cunzatu will take place from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Piazza Mercato in Motta Sant'Anastasia (CT). For three days, the square will host stalls where visitors can taste traditional seasoned bread and typical products from the Etna region, accompanied by evening music, shows, and family entertainment.
The event is organized by the Rione Panzera Cultural Association and admission is free.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including schedules and evening guests, will be announced by the Rione Panzera Cultural Association on their Facebook page in the weeks leading up to the event.
Based on previous editions, the three days will include:
