The Mediterranean volcanic wine festival in Belpasso
The Grappoli Wine Festival is the major summer celebration dedicated to volcanic wines, held in Belpasso, in the province of Catania, at the foot of Mount Etna. Set in the evocative Peppino Impastato Urban Park, the event brings together producers, sommeliers, and enthusiasts for an evening centered on a precise theme: the powerful identity of wines born from volcanic soils. Conceived by the youth association Verde Basico, the festival has quickly become one of the most anticipated oenological appointments in the Etna region.
The common thread of the event is the dialogue between Mount Etna and the other great volcanoes of the Mediterranean. Alongside Etna wineries, the festival highlights wines from the Phlegraean Fields, Vesuvius, and the Aeolian Islands, with an ever-growing international reach: recent editions have brought wineries from the Azores and the Greek Cyclades, including the archipelago of Santorini, to Belpasso. It is a journey that connects distant terroirs united by the same origin: volcanic rock.
The heart of Grappoli lies in its unlimited open tasting stations, where visitors can meet producers and sample labels that are often hard to find. The program is enriched by masterclasses led by sommeliers and industry experts, book presentations, and talks on wine culture, as well as the Grappoli Award, which recognizes those best at conveying territory, innovation, and emotion. A format that blends the conviviality of a local village festival with the rigor of a professional industry event.
Beyond wine, the festival offers a food court featuring Sicilian culinary excellence and a live soundtrack of swing and jazz, complete with a dance school for those who want to let loose. Artistic installations complete the relaxed and curated evening atmosphere, designed for savoring wine at a leisurely pace in the park's greenery.
For Belpasso and the entire metropolitan area of Catania, the Grappoli Wine Festival represents an opportunity to showcase Etna's viticultureโnow among the most appreciated in Italyโand to connect it with the rest of the volcanic world. An appointment that weaves together landscape, culture, and taste in the heart of Eastern Sicily.
