Frandura, simple and hearty

In Montalto Ligure, one of the two souls of the Montalto Carpasio Municipality (Province of Imperia), frandura is the dish of the heart. It is a hearty and simple potato cake, a sort of potato focaccia born as a way to quickly consume tubers that could not be stored. Since 2022, it has been a product with Municipal Designation (De.Co.), a recognition that protects its traditional recipe.

A festival of taste and culture

The Sagra della Frandura, now well into its fortieth edition, is held on the third Sunday of August and is organized by the Pro Loco of Montalto with the Municipality. The tasting of frandura in the original recipe starts at noon and is accompanied by other traditional dishes, while throughout the day there is music and dancing.

Open village and fun

The festival is also an opportunity to discover the village: churches and monuments remain open with guided tours, there is an artisan market and entertainment for the little ones. In the afternoon, the unmissable and jovial contest of the biggest, smallest, and strangest potato closes the day in a cheerful mood. Recognized among the Authentic Ligurian Events, the Sagra della Frandura is one of the most beloved August events in the western hinterland.
