The festival of San Rocco and salami in the duja, in Lomellina
The Sagra del Salam dla Duja in Olevano di Lomellina, in the province of Pavia, is dedicated to the most representative cured meat of Lomellina. The duja is the terracotta jar in which pork salamis, seasoned with salt and pepper and dried for about a month, are immersed and covered with lard. This particular preservation technique was developed to cope with the humid climate of the plain and is today a safeguard of local gastronomic tradition.
The festival is held on the days of the feast of San Rocco, August 15th and 16th, and intertwines the religious dimension with conviviality. The procession with the statue of the Saint winds through the town, while the characteristic Incanto โ an auction of typical products for the benefit of church expenses โ is one of the most heartfelt and participated moments of Olevano tradition.
Alongside devotion and taste, the festival offers traditional games, music, and dancing that liven up the evenings until late at night. In a small municipality in the Pavia area of Lomellina, the Sagra del Salam dla Duja is the moment when the entire community comes together around its peasant roots, amidst the flavours of the territory and traditions passed down from generation to generation.
On August 15th and 16th, 2026, Olevano di Lomellina will revive the Sagra del Salam dla Duja during the feast days of San Rocco. The star is pork salami preserved in the terracotta duja, a Lomellina specialty, offered for tasting at the festival stalls.
The event renews its traditional rites: the procession with the statue of the Saint, the characteristic Incanto (auction of typical products for the benefit of the church), traditional games, and evenings of music and dancing. The detailed program will be released by the Municipality in the weeks prior.
