The eight districts of Robbio in challenge and the legendary wheelbarrow race
The Palio dl'Urmon is the event that ignites Robbio every summer, a municipality in Lomellina, in the province of Pavia. Born in 1985, the palio takes its name from the "Urmòn", a gigantic and centuries-old elm tree that had become a symbol of the Robbiese community. For about ten days, the eight districts of the city — Torre, Muron, Ciot, Balin, Mulino, Campagnola, Piana, and Castello — compete in games and challenges in a spirit of healthy rivalry.
The highlight is the wheelbarrow race, a unique competition in the Italian landscape: a relay race in which three athletes per district pass a heavy wooden wheelbarrow loaded with a sack of sand, along a circuit that starts and ends in Piazza della Libertà. This final race, held on the first Sunday of September, determines the winning district of the palio.
Alongside the competitions, the palio features historical parades and reenactments organized by the districts, reconstructing different eras — from the late Middle Ages to the post-WWII period — telling the history and identity of the town. The festival is also an opportunity to savour typical Lomellina cuisine, including the famous maxipaniscia, in a blend of tradition, competition, and conviviality that makes the Palio dl'Urmon an unmissable event.
The Palio dl'Urmon 2026 returns to ignite Robbio between late August and the first days of September, with about ten days of festivities. The eight districts compete in games and challenges, while historical parades reconstruct the eras and traditions of the town.
The climax is the wheelbarrow race, the final event held on the first Sunday of September, which crowns the winning district. The typical Lomellina cuisine is also present, with the famous maxipaniscia among the highlights of the evenings.
The detailed calendar with dates and times will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
