About Palio dl'Urmon

The Palio dl'Urmon is the great popular festival of Robbio, in the province of Pavia, in the heart of Lomellina. For ten days, the eight districts of the city challenge each other in games, historical parades, and competitions, culminating in the legendary wheelbarrow race that crowns the winning district. Amidst historical reenactments, typical Lomellina cuisine, and community spirit, it is a unique event in the Italian panorama, born in 1985 to celebrate an ancient elm tree, a symbol of the town.

The festival of Robbio's districts

The Palio dl'Urmon is the event that ignites Robbio every summer, a municipality in Lomellina, in the province of Pavia. Born in 1985, the palio takes its name from the "Urmòn", a gigantic and centuries-old elm tree that had become a symbol of the Robbiese community. For about ten days, the eight districts of the city — Torre, Muron, Ciot, Balin, Mulino, Campagnola, Piana, and Castello — compete in games and challenges in a spirit of healthy rivalry.

The legendary wheelbarrow race

The highlight is the wheelbarrow race, a unique competition in the Italian landscape: a relay race in which three athletes per district pass a heavy wooden wheelbarrow loaded with a sack of sand, along a circuit that starts and ends in Piazza della Libertà. This final race, held on the first Sunday of September, determines the winning district of the palio.

Historical parades and Lomellina flavours

Alongside the competitions, the palio features historical parades and reenactments organized by the districts, reconstructing different eras — from the late Middle Ages to the post-WWII period — telling the history and identity of the town. The festival is also an opportunity to savour typical Lomellina cuisine, including the famous maxipaniscia, in a blend of tradition, competition, and conviviality that makes the Palio dl'Urmon an unmissable event.
