Half a century of risottos, in honour of Saint Bartholomew in Merlengo
The Sagra del Riso of Merlengo, a hamlet of Ponzano Veneto in the province of Treviso, reaches its 50th edition in 2026. It is one of the most beloved and long-standing sagre in the Treviso area, ten days at the end of August in honour of the patron saint Saint Bartholomew, which enliven the parish grounds of the hamlet.
The formula that made the sagra famous is simple and successful: each evening a different restaurateur offers their own rice-based specialty, creating a sort of risotto showcase. Accompanying the first courses are grilled dishes, summer plates, beer, and wine served under the covered outdoor stand. A gastronomic offering that varies from night to night and keeps anticipation high.
The sagra is not just about food. The patron saint's Sunday includes a community mass in the morning, lunch, and a cultural meeting in the church dedicated to the figure of Saint Bartholomew, with contributions from historian Gian Domenico Mazzocato and choral performances. For the 50th anniversary, the festival grounds host photographic panels recounting half a century of history. Promoted by Collaborazione Ponzano, the sagra is the result of the work of over a hundred volunteers and confirms itself as an identity-defining event for the community of Merlengo and the entire municipality of Ponzano Veneto.
The Sagra del Riso 2026, the fiftieth-anniversary edition, takes place in Merlengo di Ponzano Veneto from August 22 to 31. Ten days in honour of Saint Bartholomew, featuring the formula of a different risotto each evening offered by a different restaurateur, grilled dishes, summer plates, beer, and wine. For the 50th anniversary, photographic panels will retrace the history of the event.
The fiftieth-anniversary edition opens on Friday, August 22, and closes on Sunday, August 31, 2026, in the parish grounds of Merlengo. The schedule includes:
