In the Maiella district of Agnone, in the province of Isernia, the Festa della Madonna della Libera (Festival of Our Lady of Liberty) has been a tradition since 1903, intertwining religious devotion and popular celebration. For three days at the beginning of September, the district comes alive with music, food, and competitions involving the entire community of Agnone.
The Sagra del Granone
The gastronomic heart is the Sagra del Granone, dedicated to corn: polenta, corn pizza, and traditional peasant dishes served at the district's stands. Alongside the food, the program includes concerts, DJ sets, performances by flag-wavers, and the Palio della Cuccagna, a challenge that divides the town into five factions.
The procession and the burning of the church
The most solemn moment is the procession of the Madonna della Libera on September 8th, followed by a fireworks display with the evocative burning of the Maiella church. The festival is organised by the youth association La Repubblica di Maiella, which manages the program and events each year.

The 2026 edition of the Festa della Madonna della Libera and the Sagra del Granone takes place from September 6 to 8 in the Maiella district of Agnone. Three days alternating corn gastronomy, competitions between the five districts, music, and moments of devotion, culminating in the procession and fireworks on September 8th.

How to get there
Agnone can be reached by car via the SS650 Trignina or by passing through Isernia (approx. 45 km). Events take place in the Maiella district and surrounding streets.

First days of September, from the 6th to the 8th. Free admission; food and drinks are paid for at the sagra stands.
