Pietracupa's religious festival in the village nicknamed "Bethlehem of Molise"
On September 10th, Pietracupa, a municipality in the province of Campobasso, dedicates its religious festival to Pope Saint Gregory. The reference point is the church dedicated to the saint, built on the outskirts of the town, one of the places of worship in the village along with the evocative Church of Saint Anthony Abbot, which houses a 16th-century wooden crucifix without arms.
Pietracupa owes its charm to the spectacular rock cliff on which it stands, dotted with small caves carved over the centuries: a conformation that earned it the nickname "Bethlehem of Molise". According to studies, the village was founded around the 6th century AD as a settlement of monks, and still retains a secluded and evocative identity.
Like many festivals in small Molise villages, the festival of Pope Saint Gregory is above all a moment for the community: the liturgical celebration in the saint's church is accompanied by social gatherings that liven up the village. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to discover Pietracupa also through its museums—from the Museum of the Rock to the ethnographic "House of Memories"—and its traditional dishes, such as scattone, pasta cooked in wine and water.
For September 10, 2026, Pietracupa renews the festival dedicated to Pope Saint Gregory, the focal point of the village's religious calendar. The celebration takes place in the church dedicated to the saint, on the outskirts of the town. The detailed program of civil festivities will be announced by the parish and the municipality in the preceding weeks.
Program coming soon. The calendar of religious rites and civil festivities for September 10, 2026, will be communicated locally by the parish and the municipality.
Pietracupa can be reached by car from the SS17, about an hour from Campobasso. The village is small and can be easily visited on foot.
