The patron saint of Poggio Sannita, the village of the Babaci and scherpelle
On August 21st, Poggio Sannita, a municipality in the province of Isernia, celebrates its patron saint San Prospero with the most important festival of the year. The event, held in the heart of summer, is marked by the traditional rites of Molise's patron saint festivals: the solemn mass, the procession with the statue of the saint through the village streets, the brass band, and fireworks to conclude the day.
Poggio Sannita — known as Caccavone until 1923 — is now best known for the Babaci, dozens of life-sized figures made from recycled materials and placed throughout the village to represent scenes of daily life. Created in 2021 by the creativity of Fausta Mancini and Maria Porrone, they have become a small open-air museum that attracts the curious and visitors, providing an unusual backdrop to the patron saint celebrations.
The San Prospero festival is also an opportunity to discover the village's flavours: from scherpelle, the local typical sweet, to traditional Molise dishes like sagne a pezzate and cavati. Amidst devotion, folklore, and gastronomy, Poggio Sannita experiences its most heartfelt day on August 21st, in a corner of Alto Molise far from mass tourism.
For August 21st, 2026, Poggio Sannita renews the festival in honour of its patron saint San Prospero. As per tradition, the programme includes a solemn mass, a procession with the statue of the saint through the village streets, the accompaniment of the brass band, and evening fireworks. Details on timings and civil events will be announced locally in the preceding days.
