The traditional haymaking festival in Daiano, Val di Fiemme
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sagra del Fen is a summer event that celebrates one of the most iconic practices of alpine culture: haymaking, the traditional mowing and collection of hay in mountain meadows. The event takes place in Località Ganzaie, in the sun-drenched fields above Daiano, a village in the municipality of Ville di Fiemme, in the heart of Val di Fiemme, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige).
The highlight of the day is the traditional scythe-mowing competition: contestants, armed with scythes, compete in cutting grass using ancient techniques—the very methods that have defined the summers of mountain farmers for generations. It is a spectacle that combines strength, rhythm, and precision, allowing visitors to rediscover a nearly forgotten craft made of slow, skillful movements.
Following the competition, which kicks off early in the morning, the festivities continue with an alpine lunch: traditional Trentino dishes served right in the meadows in a convivial atmosphere. The afternoon comes alive with music and fortaie, the typical sweet fritters of the Fiemme valley, prepared according to old-time recipes. There is also a special moment for the little ones with a hay workshop for children, an opportunity to introduce new generations to rural wisdom.
Organized by the A.P.T. Val di Fiemme e Val di Cembra with the involvement of the local community, the Sagra del Fen is much more than just a village fair: it is a way to keep popular traditions alive and maintain the deep bond between the people of Fiemme and their land. Set against the backdrop of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the event attracts both local valley residents and curious tourists eager to experience authentic alpine farming culture.
Daiano is one of the villages that, along with Carano and Varena, forms the municipality of Ville di Fiemme. Nestled among forests and pastures, it is an ideal starting point for excursions towards the Pampeago plateau and the peaks of the Latemar. The Sagra del Fen represents one of the most cherished moments of the local summer.
