The frog festival in the heart of the Venetian plain
The Sagra dea Rana is the most anticipated gastronomic event in Cona, a municipality in the plain south of Venice, bordering the Padua region. Organized by the group Cona in Festa, the event celebrates a dish from the Venetian peasant tradition — the frog — the star of a humble cuisine that has become the identity of the village.
The food stand is the heart of the festival. On the menu are the symbolic dishes of tradition: frog risotto, fried frogs, and bisàteo (eel), alongside more modern offerings such as mixed grills, culatello, and burrata. A cuisine that satisfies lovers of tradition and those looking for a simpler dish.
Every evening the festival comes alive with live music and ballroom dancing, featuring the traditional Venetian ballroom orchestras that have always accompanied festivals in the plain. For the little ones, inflatable games are set up, while the charity raffle supports the association's activities. Admission is free, in the spirit of village festivals open to all.
The Sagra dea Rana 2026 in Cona was held over two weekends, from May 22 to 24 and from May 29 to June 2, also taking advantage of the Republic Day long weekend. The food stand served the traditional symbolic dishes every evening — frog risotto, fried frogs, and bisàteo — alongside mixed grills, culatello, and burrata.
The evenings were accompanied by live music and ballroom dancing, with inflatable games for children and the usual charity raffle. Free admission confirmed the popular spirit of one of the most cherished festivals in the Venetian plain, organized by the Cona in Festa group.
Among the orchestras announced for the festival evenings were groups performing ballroom and light music from the region.
Cona is located in the plain south of Venice, reachable by car from the SS516 Piovese and from the provincial roads connecting Piove di Sacco and Cavarzere. The festival area is in the town center.
Free admission. The food stand is open in the evenings; reservations are recommended on the busiest weekends.
