Traditional flavors and crafts in the Ormanico district of Transacqua
The Sagra de Romanic is one of the most cherished summer evenings in Transacqua, a village in the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, located in the heart of the Primiero Valley in Trentino-Alto Adige. The event takes place in Ormanico, the town's ancient historic core, where narrow alleys, stone archways, and traditional houses return to tell the stories of life in times past for one night. The event is curated by the Comitato Iniziative di Transacqua (CIT), with the support of the San Martino di Castrozza, Passo Rolle, Primiero and Vanoi Tourist Board.
The theme of the festival is captured in its dialect motto: "Magnari e mestieri de 'na volta!", meaning the foods and crafts of yesteryear. The evening revolves around two complementary themes: traditional gastronomy and the re-enactment of farming knowledge. It is a simple and authentic way to revive the memory of the Primiero community and share it with both residents and tourists vacationing in the Dolomites.
The festival begins in the late afternoon with the opening of the Ormanico area. The program typically follows this schedule:
Specialties featured during the evening include mountain cuisine from Primiero: polenta, sausage, melted cheese, beans, and cabbage, alongside homemade sweets prepared and served throughout the village streets.
Transacqua stands where the valley's streams meet and preserves a charming network of ancient houses. Ormanico, with its cobblestone alleys, provides the perfect backdrop for a festival that focuses on atmosphere: soft lighting, music, the aromas of home cooking, and the slow pace of a community coming together. The Sagra de Romanic is a free-entry event, suitable for families and those looking to discover the most genuine side of Primiero, far from the large tourist crowds of the nearby Pale di San Martino.
The festival is part of the rich summer calendar of the Primiero Valley, which includes village festivals, gastronomic events, and historical re-enactments that mark the months of July and August in this corner of Trentino. For those spending their holidays in San Martino di Castrozza or the villages of Primiero, the Sagra de Romanic is the perfect opportunity to experience an authentic village evening.
