The traditional autumn market in the historic center of Fiera di Primiero

The Primiero Autumn Fair is one of the most deeply rooted traditional events in the Primiero Valley, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Every year, on an October day, the historic center of Fiera di Primiero — the main village of the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, in the province of Trento — fills with stalls, voices, and colors, reviving a collective ritual with roots stretching back centuries. Together with the Spring Fair, it represents one of the two major markets that have always defined life in the valley.
It is no coincidence that the village is named Fiera di Primiero (Primiero Fair): the name derives from its ancient commercial vocation. Starting in the Middle Ages, under the rule of the Welsperg family and thanks to the development of silver mines managed by the canòpi (miners), the settlement was granted the privilege of holding weekly markets and annual fairs. These events were vital for the valley's farmers, who traded goods, tools, and especially livestock. The autumn fair, in particular, fell at a key moment in the rural calendar: it marked the end of summer and the start of preparations for the long Alpine winter, following the return of the herds from the mountain pastures.
Today, the Autumn Fair retains the atmosphere of a traditional village market, updated with new offerings. Along the streets and squares of the historic center, stalls line up, offering a wide variety of products:
The event takes place outdoors, between the facades of historic buildings and the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, with the silhouette of the Pale di San Martino — a UNESCO World Heritage site of the Dolomites — as a backdrop.
More than just a shopping opportunity, the Autumn Fair is a meeting point for valley residents and visitors alike. It is a chance to gather in the village, rediscover the flavors of the Trentino autumn, and experience the Alpine hospitality of Primiero. The event is part of the local autumn calendar, when the historic center dresses itself in the colors and activities of the rural world.
Fiera di Primiero can be reached via the SS50 state road from Feltre or Trento, with bus connections from the main towns. The historic center is pedestrian-friendly and has nearby parking, making it ideal for spending the day walking among the stalls.
The Primiero Autumn Fair is a recurring event held every year in October in the historic center of Fiera di Primiero. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check the official channels of the APT San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero and Vanoi for updates. As in previous editions, the fair will feature traditional stalls with typical mountain products, local handicrafts, and gastronomy, in a day dedicated to the rural tradition of the valley.
