Three nights of carne salsicciara, live music, and local crafts in the medieval village of Riardo
The Sagra al Borgo is the most anticipated summer event in Riardo, a small town in the Province of Caserta, Campania, nestled in the Alto Casertano hills among cultivated fields and natural springs. At the end of July, the alleys of the historic center, the staircases, and the spaces surrounding the castle fill with food stalls, lights, and live music. For three consecutive evenings, the village becomes a great collective square, just as it once was, inviting visitors to explore it on foot from one end to the other.
The event's subtitle, The Tradition of Carne Salsicciara, says it all. At the heart of the experience is the carne salsicciara riardese: pork seasoned according to local recipes, grilled over embers, and served at stalls alongside other regional products. This is not a dish invented for the occasion, but a home-cooked preparation that local families have passed down for generations, which the festival has successfully transformed into a collective identity.
Food stalls open every evening at 8:00 PM and are scattered throughout the historic center, ensuring that the culinary journey coincides with the discovery of the village. Alongside the specialty that gives the festival its name, you will find the most authentic flavors of Caserta's peasant cuisine:
The Sagra al Borgo format does not feature a single central stage, but rather multiple performance areas distributed throughout the village: the Castle Gardens, the Belvedere overlooking the valley, and the charming hidden Loggetta. Visitors can wander between concerts, stopping wherever the music captures their interest, in a continuous rotation of folk, rock, funk, and DJ sets.
The artistic lineup changes every year, intentionally mixing bands from the Campania scene with groups that reinterpret Southern musical traditions in a contemporary key. The result is an evening that flows seamlessly between tastings, listening, and socializing, with the crowd constantly moving through the alleys.
Riardo preserves an ancient core gathered around its castle, a Lombard-era structure that dominates the town and the surrounding plain. During the festival, the village is pedestrianized and illuminated for the occasion: the views, the walls, and the covered passages become an integral part of the scenery. In recent editions, the Pro Loco has complemented the food stalls with guided tours of the village's historical sites, craft stalls featuring traditional workmanship, exhibitions, and cultural initiatives, giving the event a depth that goes beyond the dining table.
The Sagra al Borgo has earned the Sagra di Qualità label, a national recognition awarded by Unpli (the Italian National Union of Pro Loco) to events that authentically promote a product, a culture, and the identity of a territory. This certification rewards short supply chains, transparency regarding raw materials, and the genuine bond between the event and the community. In Riardo, the organization is entirely entrusted to the Pro Loco "Eduardo De Filippo", with the patronage of the Municipality of Riardo, and relies on the volunteer work of dozens of local residents.
Riardo is located a short distance from Teano, Vairano Patenora, and the thermal spa district of the Alto Casertano, in an area that remains pleasantly off the mass tourism circuits. Coming here at the end of July means experiencing a festival still deeply tied to the town, with affordable prices, free entry, and a family atmosphere. Those who arrive early can visit the village in the sunset light and then stay late into the night between a concert and a plate of grilled meat: it is the best way to understand how, in Campania, food remains, first and foremost, a matter of community.
From July 24 to 26, 2026, the historic center of Riardo, in the Province of Caserta, hosted the twenty-first edition of the Sagra al Borgo, organized by the Pro Loco "Eduardo De Filippo" led by president Angelo Funaro. Once again this year, the event chose the 'diffused path' format: events were not concentrated in a single square but were distributed across multiple points of the medieval village, from the Castle Gardens to the Belvedere, and the hidden Loggetta.
The absolute star was the carne salsicciara riardese, prepared according to recipes passed down in the town and served grilled at stalls open every evening from 8:00 PM, alongside homemade pasta, cheeses, and traditional desserts. Alongside the gastronomic offerings, there was space for local crafts and cultural initiatives dedicated to the village and its history.
In 2026, the festival confirmed its national Sagra di Qualità recognition awarded by Unpli, which rewards events capable of authentically enhancing products, culture, and the identity of the territory. Entry remained free for all three evenings.
