Handmade pasta in Riofreddo, served with tomato and celery sauce
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sagnozzi Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Riofreddo, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. Located about sixty kilometers from Rome, where the Aniene Valley rises toward the Simbruini Mountains and the border with Abruzzo, the event is organized by the Riofreddo Pro Loco Association. Now in its twenty-eighth year, it continues to draw crowds every August to the Piazzale Ricciotti Garibaldi in the town center.
Sagnozzi are the quintessential local dish of Riofreddo: a fresh pasta made only of water and flour, hand-rolled and cut, thicker and more rustic than fettuccine. There are no eggs and no unnecessary ingredients; it is peasant cooking born of necessity, which today tells the story of the village better than any document. The traditional topping is the 'sellaru e pummidoro', a tomato sauce with celery and garlic that has an unmistakable aroma. In recent editions, the stands have also offered a version with mushrooms and truffles, a local product of these mountains.
The food stands typically open at 7:30 PM. The complete set-price menu includes a plate of sagnozzi, bruschetta, sausage with tomatoes, bread, and a glass of wine or a bottle of water. Guests can also order à la carte items: arrosticini (lamb skewers), grilled sausage sandwiches, French fries, sweet crêpes, and draft beer. The service is entirely handled by Pro Loco volunteers, who spend the days leading up to the event hand-preparing hundreds of kilos of pasta.
The festival is about more than just food. In the evening, the stage hosts the amateur singing competition 'Tanto pe' cantà', open to non-professional singers of all ages, with prizes in the form of shopping vouchers for local businesses. This is followed by live music and dancing until late at night. It is the kind of event where long tables bring together residents, vacationers, and visitors from Rome, and where the community sets the rhythm rather than a rigid program.
It is worth arriving a few hours early to explore the village: the Baronial Castle, the Church of San Nicola, and the 'Villa Garibaldi' Museum of Cultures, which is dedicated to the folk traditions of the Aniene Valley and the history of the Garibaldi family, who once had a residence here. The fresh air at an altitude of 750 meters makes Riofreddo a pleasant destination even in mid-August, when Rome is sweltering.
Note: At the time of writing, the date for the 2026 edition has not yet been officially announced by the Pro Loco. Historically, the festival takes place on August 16th or the weekend immediately following Ferragosto: it is advisable to check the association's official channels before traveling.
At the time of publishing this entry, no official announcement regarding the date or program for the 2026 Sagnozzi Festival in Riofreddo, Lazio, has been released. The local Pro Loco is active—in the spring of 2026, they organized the traditional Gnocchi Festival in Piazzale Ricciotti Garibaldi—and the summer festival is an event that has been repeated for nearly thirty years without interruption.
Based on previous editions, the evening should follow the usual format: food stands opening in the early evening, a complete set-price menu featuring sagnozzi, bruschetta, sausage, and wine, plus à la carte options (arrosticini, fries, crêpes, draft beer) and musical entertainment with the 'Tanto pe' cantà' amateur singing competition. Free admission, food and drinks for purchase.
We recommend checking the Riofreddo Pro Loco Facebook page or calling the association to confirm the date as soon as the poster is published.
By car: take the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway, exit at Vicovaro-Mandela or Carsoli-Oricola, then follow signs for Riofreddo; alternatively, take the Via Tiburtina Valeria (SS5). The journey from Rome takes about an hour. By public transport: Cotral buses run from the Ponte Mammolo station (Metro B) toward the upper Aniene Valley.
Piazzale Ricciotti Garibaldi, in the center of Riofreddo (RM). Parking is available along the roads leading into the town; arriving early is recommended.
Free admission. Complete set-price menu (15 € in the 2025 edition), with additional à la carte dishes. Cash payment is recommended.
Bring a sweater: in the evening, at an altitude of 750 meters, the temperature drops significantly. For information and date confirmation: Pro Loco di Riofreddo, Piazza Donizetti, tel. +39 328 6130693.
