About Sagnitelle and Pizzicantò

On June 12th, the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua, Castellino del Biferno stages U Pizzicantò: a spectacular human pyramid of thirteen volunteers that winds through the village streets, rotating on itself, an intangible heritage of Molise. Alongside the ritual, the Sagnitelle Festival offers handmade pasta seasoned with the famous 'sugo bugiardo' (lying sauce) for free.

U Pizzicantò: The Human Tower of Saint Anthony

In Castellino del Biferno, a small municipality in the province of Campobasso, every June 12th – the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua – one of Molise's most spectacular traditions is renewed: U Pizzicantò. It is a human pyramid formed by thirteen volunteers, arranged on three levels (seven at the base, four in the middle, two at the top), representing the thirteen graces of Saint Anthony. The human tower winds through the village streets, rotating on itself, in a display of balance requiring strength and teamwork, amidst the community's enthusiasm.

The Sagnitelle Festival

The ritual is accompanied by the Sagnitelle Festival, dedicated to the typical pasta strictly handmade by volunteers. The sagnitelle (the "segntell") are seasoned with the famous sugo bugiardo – so named because it is based on 'càscë e ovë' (cheese and egg), small meatballs made of cheese and egg, and therefore meatless – and offered free of charge to attendees.

Intangible Heritage of Molise

The Pizzicantò of Castellino del Biferno is considered intangible heritage of Molise, an authentic expression of popular devotion and the community's bond with its patron saint. Admission is free, and the festival is an unmissable opportunity to experience a unique tradition.
