Ciciliano's Spring Festival: handmade pasta, lamb ragù, and the Prenestini Mountains
In the heart of the Prenestini Mountains, just over an hour from Rome, the village of Ciciliano welcomes spring with one of the area's most beloved events: the Sagne co' gliù peco Festival, the culinary highlight of the wider Spring Festival. Launched in 2022 as the Sagnacce Festival and growing every year, the event is organized by the Ciciliano Pro Loco in collaboration with the local municipality, turning the village into a vibrant hub of nature, flavors, music, and folk traditions.
The undisputed stars are the sagne co' gliù peco, traditional egg-free fettuccine made by hand with water and flour according to local peasant recipes, served with a hearty lamb ragù. Alongside the pasta, the Pro Loco food stalls offer pecora alla callara (stewed lamb with potatoes), arrosticini, French fries, and local Cesanese wines or craft beer. It is simple, honest cooking that captures the pastoral soul of the Prenestini Mountains.
The festival is more than just a meal: mornings feature mountain hikes and excursions to the Cascata Azzurrina waterfall, led by expert guides, while the afternoon brings inflatable play areas for children and families. Evenings are filled with live music. Don't miss the guided tours of the archaeological site of Trebula Suffenas, an ancient Roman city of Aequian origin located just outside the village.
Nestled between Rome and the mountains in the Lazio region, Ciciliano is a stone-built village with ancient roots and a living agropastoral tradition. The Spring Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover it: enjoy great food, walk through woods and waterfalls, and experience the genuine hospitality of a community that, through its Pro Loco, keeps its recipes and heritage alive. A free-entry event that blends taste, nature, and local history.
The 2026 Spring Festival took place on Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, at Parco Cavalier G. Tontini in Ciciliano, organized by the Pro Loco in collaboration with the municipality.
Throughout the weekend, excursions to the Cascata Azzurrina and guided tours of the Trebula Suffenas archaeological site were also offered.
