About Poggio Moiano Flower Festival

Every year, on the last weekend of June, Poggio Moiano transforms into an open-air museum: over three hundred meters of hand-crafted floral carpets made from fresh petals, leaves, and dried flower powders cover Via Garibaldi and the main avenue. Established in 1971 by the local Pro Loco, the Sacred Heart Artistic Flower Festival blends the ephemeral art of master floral artists with the solemn Corpus Domini procession, brass bands, and the Sabina Olive Oil Festival.

A carpet of petals along the village

There is a moment, during the night between Saturday and Sunday, when Poggio Moiano does not sleep. The streets of the historic center are brightly lit, dozens of people of all ages work on their knees on the asphalt, and the scent of petals fills the air: this is the Night of Flowers, the beating heart of the Sacred Heart Artistic Flower Festival. At dawn, the village wakes up covered by over three hundred meters of floral carpets, geometric compositions, and large sacred images laid out along Via Garibaldi and the main avenue, destined to last only a few hours before being crossed by the procession.

From Corpus Domini to ephemeral art

The custom of decorating the streets with flowers for the passage of the Blessed Sacrament is ancient in this corner of Sabina, but it was in 1971—a year after the founding of the Poggio Moiano Pro Loco—that this devotional habit became a true artistic event, with the creation of actual floral carpets. Over time, regulations, competitions between groups, and an informal school that has trained generations of master floral artists were established. Today, the event is one of the most recognizable in the calendar of the Province of Rieti and the entire Lazio region, capable of attracting guest groups from other Italian flower-festival regions.

How a flower painting is born

Work begins long before Friday evening. In the days leading up to the event, groups collect and select flowers; then, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the spetalatura (petal separation) takes place, a collective ritual involving entire families. The materials are all natural:

  • fresh petals of broom, carnation, rose, and daisy;
  • leaves and green bases of wild fennel;
  • dried flower powders for chiaroscuro and finer details;
  • chalk and natural earths for preparatory drawings.

The large floral rose window in the main square has become the symbol of the event and the most photographed subject over the years.

The museum and exhibitions

Alongside the carpets, the festival has built a small documentary heritage: the so-called church of the gardens houses the Flower Festival Museum, featuring historical archives, sketches, tools, and photographs that tell the story of over half a century of editions. During the three days, the museum is open to the public and accompanied by art exhibitions and meetings dedicated to the meaning of ephemeral art.

Music, majorettes, and procession

The spectacular part is entrusted to bands, street performers, and majorettes, who animate the avenue with choreography and acrobatic figures. The most solemn moment, however, remains the Corpus Domini procession on Sunday evening, accompanied by the brass band: the parade crosses the carpets, which are thus consumed and returned to their temporary nature. Following this, the closing street concert ends the festival.

The olive oil festival and the flavors of Sabina

Poggio Moiano is a land of oil: the Sabina PDO Olive Oil is the star of the olive oil festival that accompanies the flower festival, with bruschetta and guided tastings at the stands set up along the route. It is an opportunity to also taste typical products from the Rieti area and to stop at the local establishments, which work at full capacity during the weekend. Botanical and literary walks in the surroundings complete a program designed to help visitors discover the territory beyond the event.

Why it's worth the trip

Just over an hour from Rome, the Poggio Moiano Flower Festival offers something rarely seen anymore: a festival made entirely by the inhabitants, without prefabricated sets, where the result of days of work lasts for only one evening. Those who arrive on Saturday night witness the creation; those who arrive on Sunday see the finished work and then its end. It is worth being there for both.

Poggio Moiano Flower Festival — edition 2026

The 55th edition of the Sacred Heart Artistic Flower Festival took place in Poggio Moiano from June 26 to 28, 2026, with over 300 meters of floral carpets laid out along Via Garibaldi and the main avenue. Three days of petal separation in the square, street artists, live music, opening of the Flower Festival Museum, olive oil festival, and the solemn Sunday evening Corpus Domini procession.

The 55th edition

For its fifty-fifth year, the Sacred Heart Artistic Flower Festival confirmed the formula that made it famous throughout Sabina: the historic center of Poggio Moiano transformed into an open-air museum, with sacred images and geometric motifs created with fresh petals, leaves, and dried flower powders. Local groups were joined by floral artists from Fabriano and Castelraimondo, guests of the edition.

Three days of celebration

Friday opened with the floral decoration festival and petal separation in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, followed by the opening of the museum and the street artist show by the Bazì Project. Saturday saw the completion of the floral works, evening mass, and the concert by Scirockati. On Sunday, after the botanical and literary walk and the «Petals on the Move» conference at the Municipal Theater, the Corpus Domini procession accompanied by the Don Antonio Santini Band crossed the carpets, before the final concert by the street band Fanfaroma.

Flavors and majorettes

Along the route, the olive oil festival stands were active for all three evenings, with bruschetta and guided tastings of Sabina PDO Olive Oil, while majorettes animated the avenue with choreography and acrobatic figures.
