The race that kicks off the triathlon season in Lazio, on the Sabaudia seafront
The Sabaudia Carnival Sprint Duathlon has become a classic season-opener for the Lazio multisport calendar over the years. Every year, on the last Sunday of February, the center of Sabaudia, in the province of Latina, transforms into a race circuit: start and finish on Corso Principe di Piemonte, the elegant main axis of the planned city, just a stone's throw from the seafront and the Circeo National Park. The event, classified as a Silver-level race within the Italian Triathlon Federation (FITri) circuit, reached its seventh edition in 2026.
The main event is a 27.5 km sprint duathlon, following the specialty's classic structure: an initial running leg, a central cycling leg on a fast, flat course, and a final run to the finish line. The urban track, with multiple laps in front of the spectators, makes the race spectacular to watch and perfect for those making their debut in winter multisport.
The Carnival Duathlon is more than just a sporting celebration: it is the inaugural round of the FITri Lazio Regional Championship, valid for both the Age Group and Youth circuits. The first regional titles of the season are awarded on the Pontine coast, with major Lazio clubs and delegations from outside the region taking part. The 2026 edition, held on Sunday, February 22nd, with a 9:45 AM start, saw a record turnout of approximately 250 athletes across all categories.
One of the event's strengths is its focus on the youth sector: alongside the sprint race for adults, competitions are held over distances calibrated for different age groups, culminating in the Carnival Kids Duathlon reserved for the youngest, featuring a mountain bike leg for the youngest categories. It is a true family sports festival, during a time of year when Sabaudia also comes alive with Carnival festivities.
The Municipality of Sabaudia is one of Italy's capitals for outdoor sports: the waters of Lake Paola host Olympic rowing, while the coastline and the flat roads of the Pontine plain are ideal terrain for running and cycling. The late-February duathlon highlights this heritage and brings athletes and their supporters to southern Lazio during the off-season, amidst the rationalist architecture of the town center and the dunes of the Circeo National Park.
The event is organized by A.S.G.S. Italia – Associazione Sportiva Guida Sicura, a Rome-based association led by Massimiliano Zanetti, active for years in organizing triathlon, duathlon, and aquathlon races in Lazio, with official timing provided by Next Race. Registrations are handled online and generally close on the Monday before the race.
