A parade of floats and costumed groups in the heart of Rutigliano
The Rutigliano Carnival is a community celebration that every year, during the carnival season, transforms the center of Rutigliano, an important municipality in the Metropolitan City of Bari, into a large open-air stage. At the heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups: a long procession that travels through the town's main streets, filled with music, confetti, and masks, ending in Piazza XX Settembre with a final party.
What characterizes the Rutigliano Carnival is the widespread participation of the local community. The parade is organized by the Fratres Rutigliano brotherhood with the patronage of the Municipality and the support of the Civil Protection, and sees numerous local entities marching side by side: parish groups, volunteer associations, play centers, sports clubs, and neighborhood committees. Dozens of themed mascots accompany the procession, involving children and families in a cheerful and inclusive atmosphere. Admission to the parade is always free and open to everyone.
The costumed procession winds along the city's main arteries, crossing the historic center and town squares to arrive at Piazza XX Settembre, the beating heart of the festival. Here, at the end of the parade, the day continues with entertainment, music, and fun, as the town fills with families and curious visitors who have arrived from neighboring towns in the province of Bari.
The Carnival is part of a calendar of popular traditions that makes Rutigliano one of the capitals of Puglian craftsmanship. The city is famous throughout Puglia for its terracotta work and its typical clay whistles, to which the historic Terracotta Whistle Fair is dedicated. Held on January 17th for the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, it traditionally marks the opening of the city's carnival season. The bond between the Carnival and local craftsmanship gives the festival a unique identity, where folklore, masks, and ancient trades coexist.
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, the center of Rutigliano hosted the parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups of the Rutigliano Carnival, with a meeting in the afternoon and a procession along the main streets of the city to Piazza XX Settembre. In case of bad weather, it was scheduled to be postponed to Tuesday, February 17th.
The event, organized by the Fratres Rutigliano brotherhood with the patronage of the Municipality and the support of the Civil Protection, saw the participation of numerous local associations, including Il Prato Fiorito odv, ASD Giovani Aquile, Birbalandia Ludoteca, TerraColta Lab, Azione Cattolica San Domenico, Kimuchi, Play Seven, Anspi San Filippo Neri, Anspi Mons. Di Donna, and the Rione Madonna delle Grazie. The procession was enlivened by dozens of themed mascots, in a festive atmosphere dedicated especially to children and families.
Rutigliano is located in the Metropolitan City of Bari, about 20 km from the regional capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS100 Bari-Taranto road, taking the exit for Rutigliano-Conversano. By train, it is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est line (Rutigliano station) with connections from Bari.
Participation in the parade is free and open to all. The procession takes place in the afternoon; it is recommended to check the exact meeting time and route on the official channels of the Municipality of Rutigliano before the event. In case of bad weather, the parade may be postponed to a later date.
Wear comfortable clothing to follow the procession on foot through the streets of the center. The event is suitable for families and children.
