About Run for the Whales
Running for the Sea
Run for the Whales is a charity running race held in Sanremo, in the province of Imperia, along the cycle path of the Riviera dei Fiori. The event has a solidarity and environmental objective: the proceeds support the Tethys Institute ONLUS, dedicated to the research and protection of cetaceans in the Ligurian Sea.
The Pelagos Sanctuary
The waters off the Riviera dei Fiori are part of the Pelagos Sanctuary, the international marine protected area dedicated to Mediterranean marine mammals, where fin whales, pilot whales, and dolphins live. Running for cetaceans in this stretch of coast thus takes on a special meaning, linking sport to the protection of a unique natural heritage.
A Race for Everyone
The event includes a competitive half-marathon, a 10 km race, and a 3 km non-competitive event, also open to families and walkers. The route, predominantly flat and overlooking the sea, makes the event accessible to everyone, combining the desire to run with a commitment to the environment.
Run for the Whales — edition 2026
The 2026 edition is scheduled for June 20 along the cycle path of the Riviera dei Fiori. The event offers a competitive half-marathon, a 10 km race, and a 3 km non-competitive event, open to all.
As is tradition, the initiative has charitable purposes for the benefit of the Tethys Institute ONLUS, dedicated to the protection of cetaceans in the Ligurian Sea and the Pelagos Sanctuary.

How to get there
Sanremo is served by its own train station on the Genoa-Ventimiglia line. By car, take the Sanremo exit on the A10 motorway. The route runs along the coastal cycle path.
