A day among the ancient fir trees of the Abetina di Rosello, in Abruzzo
"Rosello – A Journey Through Nature and Memory" is the summer event that invites residents and visitors to discover one of Abruzzo's most precious natural treasures: the Abetina di Rosello Regional Nature Reserve, in the municipality of Rosello, in the province of Chieti, on the border with Molise. Established in 1997 and spanning 211 hectares at altitudes between 850 and nearly 1,180 meters, the reserve protects one of the best-preserved silver fir stands in the Apennines, with ancient specimens towering like true green giants.
The initiative offers a route designed for all ages, alternating moments of discovery, play, and wellness:
Rosello is listed among the Authentic Villages of Italy (Borghi Autentici d'Italia). A Benedictine settlement since the early Middle Ages and documented since the 12th century, it preserves the Church of San Nicola, the Palazzo Caracciolo-Fornari, and the ruins of the ancient circular tower. Its cuisine tells the story of the territory, with specialties such as cannarozzetti with saffron, Abruzzese-style fettuccine, and prized pecorino cheeses.
The event is part of the tradition of "wellness walks" promoted over the years by the reserve and the municipality of Rosello, inspired by rejuvenating contact with nature. Along the trails, it is possible to observe the area's rich fauna—from woodpeckers to birds of prey—and the typical flora of the Apennine fir forest, in an experience that weaves together environmental education, local memory, and self-care.
The event takes place in the morning, with a meeting point at the Abetina picnic area on Via Santa Liberata. Places are limited and booking is mandatory. An ideal occasion for families, nature lovers, and hikers who wish to discover the most authentic soul of inland Abruzzo.
