Giant kites, Chinese culture, and live music beneath the arches of Parco degli Acquedotti
The Rome International Kite Festival is one of the most original spring events in the Municipality of Rome and the entire Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. The festival takes place at Parco degli Acquedotti, in the area behind the church of San Policarpo, with access from Via Lemonia in the Appio Claudio district (Municipality VII). The setting is a spectacle in itself: the monumental arches of the Claudio and Acqua Felice aqueducts provide a natural stage for dozens of kites soaring above the meadows, creating a visual dialogue between Roman archaeology and ancient Eastern art.
The festival stems from a cultural twinning with Weifang, the Chinese city recognized as the world capital of kites, whose artisanal tradition is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Each year, a delegation of master artisans brings to Rome handmade silk and bamboo kites, some of monumental proportions: dragons dozens of meters long, butterflies, phoenixes, and figures from Chinese mythology, each hand-painted. Alongside them, Italian and European clubs fly their own sport and acrobatic kites, creating a technical and poetic exchange.
The program is organized into areas that run concurrently throughout the event, allowing families to move freely between activities:
In recent editions, the festival has expanded with two sections that have changed its rhythm. The Kite Music Festival brings live bands to the stage with a deliberately eclectic lineup ranging from rock to funk, pop to rap, entertaining the audience into the evening. The Kite Film Festival offers outdoor screenings, short films, and meetings with Italian and international directors: cinema under the arches, with free admission, has become one of the most anticipated moments of Sunday.
Admission to the festival is free, and almost all activities, including workshops, are free of charge. This is a key reason for the event's success, which over the years has drawn huge crowds to Parco degli Acquedotti, primarily families from the south-east quadrant of Rome but also visitors from across the Lazio region. Environmental sustainability is a stated theme of the organization: the kite, which flies without a motor or noise, is presented as a symbol of a gentle relationship with the landscape.
The event is promoted by the International Sino-Italian Cultural Association Melodie di Seta, with the patronage of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Italy, the Lazio Region, the Appia Antica Regional Park, and the International Kite Federation, and with the support of Municipality VII of Rome Capital.
Parco degli Acquedotti is a large green area with very little shade: a hat, water, and comfortable shoes are highly recommended. The best time to see the giant kites in flight is in the afternoon when the breeze is most consistent; in the evening, the park changes atmosphere with music and screenings. It is worth taking advantage of the visit to walk along the path of the Claudio Aqueduct, one of the most photographed landscapes in Rome's historic outskirts.
From May 8th to 10th, 2026, Parco degli Acquedotti hosted the fourth edition of the Rome International Kite Festival, organized by the Melodie di Seta association in the area behind the church of San Policarpo. Public access was from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, and from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Sunday.
The absolute stars were the artistic kites handmade in silk and bamboo by master artisans from Weifang, accompanied by acrobatic displays and an international competition open to registrants, with prizes provided by sponsors. Around the flight area, there were Chinese calligraphy and kite-making workshops, tea ceremonies, Hanfu traditional dress parades, open lessons in Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Kung Fu, and Five Animal Gymnastics, the Kids' Play Area, and the food area with Chinese cuisine.
The two major novelties of 2026 were the Kite Music Festival, with live bands playing rock, funk, pop, and rap, and the Kite Film Festival: Saturday evening featured the screening of the animated film Monster Hunt 2, and Sunday at 6:30 PM, the presentation of Curse of the Golden Flower in the presence of director Gabriele Mainetti.
Live concerts scheduled during the festival evenings, featuring rock, funk, pop, and rap bands.
Parco degli Acquedotti, entrance at Via Lemonia 256, Appio Claudio district (Municipality VII), Rome. By Metro: Line A, Giulio Agricola stop, then about a 10-minute walk. By car: Exit 22 of the Grande Raccordo Anulare towards Via Tuscolana; parking in the surrounding streets is free but highly sought after on weekends, so public transport is recommended.
Admission is free. Workshops, martial arts lessons, and screenings are also free to participate in; only the food area and craft stands require payment.
The flight area is an open meadow: comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a blanket or mat for sitting are recommended. The event is suitable for children and strollers. Pets are allowed in the park on a leash, but it is best to avoid the flight area.
