The Rome Fringe Festival is the most important Italian showcase for independent theatre and emerging performing arts. Established in 2012 at Villa Mercede—where the debut edition drew over twenty thousand attendees to more than fifty off-theatre shows—the festival has become a benchmark for the national contemporary scene, directly inspired by the Fringe tradition born in Edinburgh in 1947. Today, the event is hosted at the Teatro Vascello, a historic venue in the Monteverde district of Rome, the capital of the Lazio region.
How the competition works
At the heart of the Rome Fringe Festival is the competition between theatre companies: a selection of shows competes in an initial elimination phase, consisting of multiple daily rounds, after which a jury of industry professionals selects the finalists to vie for the main prize on the final night. Companies arrive from all over Italy, bringing diverse artistic languages, from social drama to experimental theatre, and from intimate monologues to auteur comedy. It is a vital showcase for emerging artists, offering them visibility, critical feedback, and concrete touring opportunities.
Awards and circuit
The winning production receives the Best Show Award, which secures a tour of performances in Italian theatres belonging to the Zona Indipendente circuit. Alongside the main prize, the festival presents the Critics' Award, decided by a jury of theatre critics, and the Alessandro Fersen Award, sponsored by the foundation of the same name. This awards system turns the festival into a true professional springboard: for many independent companies, winning at the Fringe means the chance to take their work on stage for an entire season.
Beyond the stage
The programme extends beyond theatrical competition. Within the Teatro Vascello, spanning the main hall and the foyer, the festival hosts stand-up comedy events dedicated to new forms of live comedy, as well as screenings of independent short films from various countries. Rome Fringe Festival 2026 — 14th Edition
The fourteenth edition of the Rome Fringe Festival is held at the Teatro Vascello in Rome from July 13 to 24, 2026, under the artistic direction of Fabio Galadini and with the evocative theme "Get Lost to Find Yourself". Applications for the competition have doubled compared to the previous year, a sign of the growing vitality of the Italian independent scene.
Competition and sections
Fifteen competitive shows make up the main programme, a mosaic of languages and visions from across the peninsula. The elimination phase takes place from July 13 to 23 with multiple daily rounds; the final evening, scheduled for Friday, July 24 at 7:00 PM, features the three finalist shows chosen by the jury, composed of directors from the Zona Indipendente circuit. Completing the programme is a Stand-Up Comedy section in the theatre foyer and the debut of Fringe Movie, a showcase of independent short films from the United States, Canada, Pakistan, India, Croatia, and Italy.
Awards
The winner receives the Best Show Award, which includes a tour of theatres in the Zona Indipendente circuit during the 2026/2027 season. The Critics' Award and the Alessandro Fersen Award will also be presented.

Featured titles include: Pigiama Party, Mi chiamavano Tina, Quello che tu hai fatto a me, Fine, Castagne Matte, Due Pesci, Masnada Quest – Trova Margherita, Ex Pose Me, Bajkal, Mancanza di stelle, Il corpo di Matteotti, The Kisser – Divoratrice di bocche, Left Blank, C'ho la scoliosi, and Due, canto di balene per pinguini soli.
Stand-Up Comedy Section: Events dedicated to new voices in auteur comedy, hosted in the Teatro Vascello foyer.
Fringe Movie: A selection of independent international short films (USA, Canada, Pakistan, India, Croatia, Italy).
Friday, July 24, 7:00 PM: Final evening with the three finalist shows and award ceremony.
