About L'Angelo e la luna

Every summer, Castel Sant'Angelo transforms into an open-air stage: L'Angelo e la luna brings contemporary circus, dance, music, and theatre to the courtyards, historic halls, and panoramic terrace of the Roman castle. An evening festival that weaves together performing arts and heritage, featuring performances by national and international artists in the heart of Rome, just a stone's throw from St. Peter's and the Tiber.

The evening festival at Castel Sant'Angelo

L'Angelo e la luna is the summer performing arts festival that brings Castel Sant'Angelo to life, one of the most iconic monuments in Rome. Promoted by the Pantheon and Castel Sant'Angelo Institute - Directorate of National Museums of the City of Rome, the festival opens the castle's spaces in the evening and transforms them into a living stage, offering the public a unique way to experience heritage: not just as a museum visit, but as an artistic experience under the stars.

A multidisciplinary program

The festival brings together contemporary circus, dance, music, and theatre in a program that combines diverse artistic languages and renowned performers. Performances are spread throughout the summer and early autumn, moving through the castle's many environments: from the Court of Alexander VI to the Sala Paolina, from the San Matteo Bastion to the Sala Apollo, and the Cortile dell'Angelo up to the panoramic terrace overlooking the city. Some productions are itinerant, leading spectators from room to room and making the architecture an integral part of the dramaturgy.

Circus inside a monument

One of the festival's hallmarks is the presence of contemporary circus within a cultural site, a novelty for a place like Castel Sant'Angelo. Alongside circus performances, the program features contemporary dance, narrative theatre, and concerts ranging from classical music to jazz, in a continuous dialogue between tradition and innovation. The festival is directed by Luca Mercuri, with the program curated by the Institute's artistic team.

Summer in Rome, between the Tiber and St. Peter's

Set in the Castel Sant'Angelo district, between Borgo and Prati, the festival offers a unique setting: the walls of the Mausoleum of Hadrian, the bridge of angels over the Tiber, and the skyline of St. Peter's Basilica. Attending a show here means combining the discovery of a Roman heritage jewel with the pleasure of a great live performance in one of the Capital's most evocative seasons.
