The Romantic Night in the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy is one of the most anticipated national events promoted by the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy. Established in 2015, it transforms hundreds of small historic centers into scenes suspended in time, where the beauty of alleys and squares meets romance. For the eleventh edition, scheduled around the summer solstice, participating villages light up with torches and candles for an evening entirely dedicated to love and romance.
Among the featured villages is Montaione, a jewel of the Florentine Valdelsa in the Province of Florence, in the heart of Tuscany. Unlike most centers that celebrate on June 20, Montaione celebrates the Romantic Night on Saturday, June 21, 2026, with the historic center dressing up for its most evocative evening.
A medieval village in the Tuscan hills
Included for several years in the list of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy and awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club, Montaione is an ancient village of Etruscan-Roman origin with just under 3,500 inhabitants. It stands at an altitude of about 370 meters, surrounded by hills of oaks, chestnut trees, vineyards, and olive groves, gathered around its bell tower. The name is first recorded in a deed of donation from 1113.
Strolling through Montaione during the Romantic Night means crossing centuries of history. The center houses the Palazzo Pretorio, dating back to the 14th century, with its stone and glazed terracotta coats of arms on the facade, now home to the Civic Museum, and the Church of San Regolo, a remarkable example of Tuscan architecture. Not far away, in the municipal territory, lies the famous Sacro Monte di San Vivaldo, the so-called "Jerusalem of San Vivaldo," with its 16th-century chapels that reproduce the sites of the Holy Land.

The Romantic Night is not just Italian: on the same occasion, associations of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Spain, Wallonia (Belgium), and other countries organize similar initiatives in their respective territories, making this evening an appointment dedicated to enhancing the identity heritage of small towns.

How to get there
Montaione is located in the Florentine Valdelsa, in a strategic position: within about an hour's drive from Florence, Pisa, Siena, and Lucca, and about thirty minutes from San Gimignano and Volterra. By car, it can be reached from the Florence-Pisa-Livorno (FI-PI-LI) expressway, taking the exit towards Valdelsa. The most convenient train stations are Castelfiorentino or San Miniato, from which you can continue by car or bus.
