A night dedicated to love amidst the medieval alleys of the Majella village, in the Province of Chieti
The Romantic Night in the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy is a national event that, every year around the summer solstice, celebrates love and the beauty of Italy's small historic towns. Among the Abruzzo villages taking part is Palena, a charming town in the Province of Chieti, Abruzzo, nestled at an altitude of 767 meters at the foot of the Majella massif, along the course of the Aventino River.
Palena is one of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy and stands in the heart of the Majella National Park, recognized as a UNESCO Geopark. Its historic center, rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War, preserves the ancient medieval quarter with its network of alleys, stairways, and stone portals rising towards the Ducal Castle, built around 1100. Notable monuments include the Church of Sant'Antonino Martire, which houses the silver bust of Saint Falco, the Church of the Madonna della Neve, and the small Aventino Theater, one of the smallest in Europe. The area is also famous for the Marsican Brown Bear Museum and the Bear Wildlife Area, a symbol of the wild nature of the Majella.
During the Romantic Night, from sunset until late at night, the village lights up simultaneously with lights, torches, and candles. The widespread program offers moments common to all participating villages:
The national edition has love and memories as its central theme: an invitation to rediscover, among the stones of the Chieti village, the emotions, traditions, and memories linked to places of the heart. The setting of the historic center at the foot of the Majella, the starry sky of the summer solstice, and the hospitality of the local community make the evening in Palena an intimate and authentic experience, far from mass tourism.
The participation of individual villages in the Romantic Night varies from year to year according to the registrations of the respective municipalities. It is advisable to check the participation and the updated program of Palena on the official channels of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy and the Municipality before planning your visit.
The 2026 edition of the Romantic Night in the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy took place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, the eleventh national edition on the theme "Love for memories". Palena was among the fourteen villages of Abruzzo and Molise participating in the evening.
From sunset until late at night, the historic center was illuminated with lights, torches, and candles, coming alive with musical corners scattered through the alleys, candlelight strolls, tastings of typical Palena products, and the official "Pensiero d'Amore" dessert, served simultaneously in all the villages of the network. As per tradition, the evening concluded with the famous midnight kiss, which symbolically united all the squares of the Italian villages.
Palena is located in the Province of Chieti, in the upper Aventino valley, at the foot of the Majella. By car, it can be reached from the A25 motorway (Torre de' Passeri or Bussi-Popoli exit) continuing along the state roads towards the Aventino valley, or from the Adriatic coast by going up the SS84. The Palena railway station is located along the Sulmona-Isernia line.
The evening takes place mainly outdoors, among the stone alleys and stairways of the historic center: comfortable shoes and a jacket for the evening are recommended, as at 767 meters above sea level, nighttime temperatures drop even in summer. Access to the widespread events is generally free; tastings at the food and wine stands and the "Pensiero d'Amore" dessert are for a fee.
