Three nights of native Italian grape varieties at the Botanical Garden of Rome
Roma Hortus Vini is the event that, for three evenings in June, opens the gates of the Botanical Garden Museum of Rome (Largo Cristina di Svezia, in the Trastevere district) after sunset to celebrate the richness of native Italian grape varieties. Conceived by renowned taster Luca Maroni and organised by Sens Eventi in collaboration with I Migliori Vini Italiani, the event brings over 200 labels from every region of the peninsula to the capital, ranging from great classics like Nebbiolo and Sangiovese to rarer varieties such as Pecorino d'Abruzzo or Tintilia molisana.
The scenic heart of the festival is Vigneto Italia, the ampelographic collection created by Luca Maroni within the Botanical Garden: over 150 native vine varieties from all Italian regions cultivated in a single plot using sustainable agricultural principles. From this experimental vineyard come the Somma Sapienza wines, a white and a red obtained by blending dozens of different grape varieties vinified together under the same soil and climate conditions. It is among these rows that Maroni conducts the famous Dégustation sur l'herbe, tastings held while sitting on the grass under the Roman sky.
Roma Hortus Vini is more than just a tasting: the evenings come alive with theatrical sketches by Michele La Ginestra, DJ sets, stilt walkers, juggling, and aerial dance. Tasting stands, organised by region, allow guests to wander freely among producers with a glass in hand, while the food area offers street food and vegetarian options. A format that blends wine culture, biodiversity, and entertainment in one of the city's most evocative green settings.
Now in its seventh edition in 2026, the event has established itself as one of the most anticipated food and wine gatherings of the Roman summer, attracting enthusiasts, industry professionals, and curious visitors alike. The setting of the Botanical Garden, a botanical jewel of the city located at the foot of the Janiculum Hill in the province of Rome (Lazio), adds the charm of a historic garden illuminated at night, amidst rare plants, fountains, and glimpses of the greenery of Trastevere.
The seventh edition of Roma Hortus Vini brought the Botanical Garden of Rome to life for three evenings, from June 12 to 14, 2026. The protagonists were over 200 wines from native grape varieties from every Italian region, arranged at tasting stands by region, with tastings included in the ticket. The central setting was the Vigneto Italia with its over 150 vine varieties, the stage for the Dégustation sur l'herbe sessions led by Luca Maroni. The evenings combined wine, theatre, music, and live performance in one of the capital's most evocative green settings.
Each evening, the Botanical Garden of Rome opened after sunset for three nights dedicated to native Italian wine, featuring free tastings, performances, and music.
