The capital's open-air cinema, from May to October in every district
Arene di Roma Summer is not just another festival: it is the framework through which Rome Capital, via the Department of Major Events, Sport, Tourism, and Fashion, networks all the open-air cinema arenas active in the capital during the summer season. In the Municipality of Rome, in the province of Rome and the heart of the Lazio region, the result is a calendar that exceeds forty locations and covers the entire municipal territory, from the historic center to the outermost districts, with programming running from late May until the end of October.
The strength of the initiative lies in its geography: alongside historic and celebrated arenas, screens are set up in neighborhood parks, schoolyards, self-managed cultural centers, and reclaimed spaces. It is a deliberate political and cultural choice, viewing evening screenings as a local service and an opportunity for social interaction during the months when the city empties out. Many evenings offer free admission, while others require a modest ticket or a membership card for the host venue.
The overall programming is intentionally diverse: restored great classics, first-run films from the recently concluded season, Italian and European auteur cinema, documentaries, previews, themed nights, and children's films in the early afternoon or prime time. Several arenas combine screenings with book presentations, concerts, debates, and refreshment areas, transforming into true cultural villages open throughout the evening.
Screenings almost everywhere begin between 9:00 PM and 9:15 PM, when the Roman sky is dark; venues generally open an hour earlier, and it is advisable to arrive early at the most popular free arenas, where seats fill up quickly. Many arenas operate every day of the week, from Monday to Sunday, for consecutive weeks.
The arenas have always been one of the most iconic chapters of the Roman Summer, the season of events that accompanies the city from June to September. Watching an open-air film in a Trastevere square, under the arches of an ancient aqueduct, or in a suburban park is an experience that Romans consider part of their emotional calendar, and for those visiting the Capital, it represents a different and more authentic way to experience it after sunset.
The umbrella program promoted by Rome Capital covers the entire season, from May 26th to October 31st, 2026, with evening screenings distributed among historic squares, parks, school courtyards, and suburban cultural spaces. The formula remains the established one: most evenings offer free admission, screenings start around 9:00 PM - 9:15 PM, and each arena maintains its own programming identity within a single city-wide calendar.
2026 confirms the polycentric vocation of the initiative, with screens lit up in the heart of Trastevere and Esquilino as well as in Corviale, Tor Marancia, Cinecittร , and the districts of Municipality XV.
The film schedules for each arena are published progressively on the websites and social channels of individual organizers and are subject to change.
The arenas are distributed throughout the territory of Rome: they can be reached by subway (lines A, B, B1, C), tram, and city buses. Parco degli Acquedotti is served by metro A (Giulio Agricola / Subaugusta), Piazza San Cosimato by tram 8 in Trastevere, Piazza Vittorio by metro A (Vittorio Emanuele), and Isola Tiberina by the Lungotevere buses.
Most arenas offer free admission without reservation; some venues require a reduced ticket or a membership card for the host space. Always check the conditions for each individual arena.
Arrive at least 30-45 minutes before the start at the most popular free arenas. Bring a light sweatshirt for late-season evenings and check the updated calendar, which is subject to changes due to bad weather.
