The Epiphany bonfire that burns on the Stella River, in front of Villa Ottelio Savorgnan
In Friuli, the night of Epiphany is the night of fires: everywhere in the countryside, the pignarûi are lit, the large propitiatory bonfires whose tradition has its roots in Celtic and pre-Christian rites, when omens for the coming year were drawn from the smoke. But in Ariis, a small hamlet of Rivignano Teor in the province of Udine, this custom takes on a very special and spectacular form: the Incendio sul Fiume, a bonfire that burns while floating on the water of the Stella River.
The setting is of rare beauty: on the evening of January 5th, at the bend of the Stella River, in front of the historic Villa Ottelio Savorgnan, the great Epiphany bonfire is lit. The reflection of the flames on the dark water, the pyrotechnic choreographies, and the light effects create a magical and suspended atmosphere, which attracts numerous visitors from all over the Friulian lowlands every year.
The event is not just a show: it is also a community celebration. While the fire burns, Befana (the Epiphany witch) delivers stockings and gifts to the children, and participants are offered hot mulled wine (brulè) and pinza, the typical Friulian holiday cake. Afterwards, for those who book, the Epiphany dinner is held in the historic Salt Warehouses of the Villa.
The Incendio sul Fiume is organized by the Pro Loco Cuore dello Stella APS of Ariis, the custodian of this corner of the Friulian plain crossed by the Stella River, one of the few navigable spring rivers in the region. An event that closes the Christmas holidays in the most evocative way, combining the ancestral charm of fire with the magic of water.
In 2026, the Pro Loco Cuore dello Stella will once again bring the magic of the River Fire to Ariis. On Monday, January 5th, at 7:30 PM, on the Stella River's bend in front of Villa Ottelio Savorgnan, the great Epiphany bonfire will be lit, accompanied by dances and pyrotechnic displays on the water. For everyone, mulled wine and pinza cake will be served, while Befana distributes stockings to the youngest attendees. Those who wish can book the Epiphany dinner in the Villa's Salt Warehouses.
