Three days of sea, sport, and tradition in Rio Marina, on the Island of Elba
The Rio Marina Sea and Maritime Festival is an annual event held at the end of May that celebrates the deep bond between the village of Rio Marina and the sea. As a district of the Municipality of Rio on the Island of Elba (Province of Livorno, Tuscany), Rio Marina possesses a dual soul: maritime and mining. The festival, organized by the Pro Loco of Rio with the support of the municipal administration, weaves these two identities together through a three-day program blending sport, culture, and tradition.
The sporting heart of the event is the "Marcello Gori Trophy" Match Race, which sees boats competing in the waters in front of the harbor. On the running front, a race featuring special athletes from across Elba takes place, serving as a powerful moment of inclusion. There is also space for fishing with the Piaggia Trophy and, among the most spectacular highlights, a flyboard show featuring acrobatic maneuvers between water and sky along the Sasso waterfront.
The festival opens with a memorial ceremony for the fallen at the Terrazza degli Spiazzi and continues with a rich cultural program: conferences on the local mining history, presentations dedicated to the Pelagos Cetacean Sanctuary, screenings of maritime documentaries, and stargazing sessions with the "Under the Sky of Rio" event. Evenings are filled with entertainment, including cabaret and live music in the village squares.
The event thrives thanks to the participation of numerous associations, tourism operators, and restaurant owners in Rio Marina, as well as local schools, which play a leading role with short films and student projects. Naval modeling exhibitions, craft markets, and tastings complete a weekend that transforms this Elban village into a living showcase of its maritime traditions.
The 2026 edition opened on Saturday, May 30, with a memorial ceremony for the fallen at the Terrazza degli Spiazzi, followed by the "Marcello Gori Trophy" Match Race and a running race featuring special athletes from across Elba. In the evening, Colonel Carlo Calcagni gave a conference titled "Never Give Up," followed by a cabaret show by Carmine Faraco and the "Under the Sky of Rio" stargazing session.
Sunday, May 31, featured the Piaggia Trophy fishing competition, sports award ceremonies, and the spectacular flyboard show by Cristian Perseu along the Sasso waterfront. Monday, June 1, concluded the event with conferences on local mining history, a presentation of the Pelagos Sanctuary, and the screening of the short film "Dreaming of Rio" created by students from the Carducci Institute.
The festival takes place in Rio Marina, a district of the Municipality of Rio, on the Island of Elba (Province of Livorno). Events animate the waterfront, the harbor, the Terrazza degli Spiazzi, Piazza Mazzini, and other locations throughout the village.
Rio Marina can be reached by ferry. From the mainland, you arrive in Portoferraio (connections from Piombino) and continue by car toward the eastern side of the island. Rio Marina also has its own port connected to Piombino. By car, you can board the ferry at Piombino Marittima.
The event is a public festival, and most activities held throughout the area are free to access.
