The May Day celebration in the heart of the Villa Comunale in Solarino
In the heart of the province of Syracuse, about 17 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital and at the foot of the Monti Climiti, the town of Solarino celebrates one of its most deeply rooted traditions every May 1st: the Ricotta Festival. Established around 1981, the event has grown over time to become a fixture in the Sicilian festival calendar, attracting visitors from across the entire Syracuse area.
The absolute protagonist is the warm ricotta, prepared according to local dairy traditions and served for the May Day breakfast. The aroma of freshly made ricotta fills the air throughout the day, accompanied by food and wine stalls featuring local products, as well as tastings of cheeses and regional specialties. The festival is a perfect opportunity to rediscover the authentic flavors of the Iblean countryside.
The event takes place in the Villa Comunale of Solarino, on Via Piave, the beating heart of the festivities. From morning until evening, the program features live music, performances, and entertainment. There is no shortage of activities for the little ones: inflatable play areas, a dedicated recreational zone, traditional games, and the unmissable kite-flying competitions. The day, which coincides with Labor Day, also retains a civic significance, with reflections and moments dedicated to the theme of work.
Organized by the Municipality of Solarino together with the Pro Loco Solarino, the festival is an expression of the values of solidarity and sharing that animate the community. More than just a gastronomic event, it is a moment for the town to come together and celebrate its roots in a corner of eastern Sicily that remains authentic and deeply tied to its traditions.
The Ricotta Festival of Solarino is confirmed for May 1st, 2026 at the Villa Comunale, in keeping with the traditional May Day date. The organization remains entrusted to the Municipality of Solarino and the Pro Loco Solarino.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the list of musical guests and performances, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event. As per tradition, the day will feature breakfast with warm ricotta, stalls with local products, live music, performances, and activities for children.
