The medieval fortress of the Ordelaffi reopens to the public with art exhibitions and flavors of Romagna
Perched on a puddingstone spur over 240 meters high, the Rocca di Predappio Alta overlooks the medieval village that was the municipal seat until 1927. The fortress, linked to the names of the Calboli and Ordelaffi families, lords of Forlì, tells centuries of feudal struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines in the heart of the Forlì Apennines. After a long period of closure, the Pro Loco Predappio Alta, in collaboration with the Municipality of Predappio, is reopening the monument's doors to the public during the 2026 season.
The reopening is accompanied by two exhibitions that intertwine local memory and creativity. The first features recycled cardboard artifacts made by children in the "Fantasy and creativity with cardboard" workshop at the Elianto Center, a reuse project that transforms waste materials into works of art. The second is dedicated to the photographs of Predappio-born photographer Serena Ferlini, who documented the key moments of the preparation workshops, assembly, and dismantling of the ephemeral structure set up in 2025.
In addition to the exhibitions, a visit to the Rocca offers a splendid panoramic view of the surrounding hills and the chance to taste the local food and wine products. On the first opening weekends, visitors could taste wine and fossa cheese, excellences of the Romagna tradition, in a convivial atmosphere that attracted over two hundred attendees on the opening weekend alone.
The event is much more than an extraordinary opening: it is an invitation to rediscover Predappio Alta, the ancient historic center of the Municipality of Predappio, its cobbled streets, stone houses, and the view over the Rabbi valley. A family-friendly cultural offering, where historical heritage, children's workshops, and gastronomic tradition merge into an open-air weekend, in the green countryside of the province of Forlì-Cesena, in Emilia-Romagna.
The 2026 edition of the reopening of the Rocca di Predappio Alta is spread over several days: May 23-24, June 1-2, June 20-21, July 4-5, and July 18-19, with usual hours from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM (opening from 10:00 AM on indicated Sundays).
The public can visit two exhibitions: recycled cardboard artifacts made by children from the Elianto Center workshop and photographs by Serena Ferlini dedicated to the ephemeral structure of 2025. The experience is complemented by panoramic views of the Forlì Apennines and tastings of wine and fossa cheese.
Predappio Alta is located along the road leading up from Predappio (Predappio Nuova), about 3 km from the town center, in the province of Forlì-Cesena. By car, it can be reached from Forlì along the SP3 del Rabbi; the nearest highway exit is Forlì on the A14. The reference train station is Forlì, from which you can continue by car or local services.
The Rocca opens on selected days between late May and July, usually from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM (with morning opening from 10:00 AM on indicated Sundays). It is advisable to check the updated dates with the Pro Loco Predappio Alta and the Municipality of Predappio.
